How to fix Windows 8 apps that won't load ?

This question has suggested answer(s)

I've tried every single usual fix I could find on the web:

1) Restart PC (duh)

2) Boot in safemode and reboot normal

3) Verify resolution (i am way over the minimum recommended)

4) Update bios, update display driver, windows updates (every updates available from DELL and Microsoft)

5) Tried Refreshing Win8 but harddrive is locked...

6) Removed windows clock application...

7) Disabled McAfee for a few minutes

7) Ran the Windows 8 "AppDiagnostic" :

- This tells me the display driver might be out-of-date ---> WRONG!

- Device troubleshooter says modifications to the material (?) might not have been detected ---> what the... ?

  • When trying to launch Windows 8 apps, there are a few things you will want to check first. As a standard, Windows 8 apps cannot be run from the local administrator account. You will need to create a new user with administrator privileges and the apps should launch just fine. Also, if you have your machine joined to a domain, you will want to ensure you are using any account aside from the domain administrator account as well. Additional information and resources can be found on the Springboard Series page for Windows 8 on TechNet here.

  • I just bought a new Dell laptop with windows 8 installed as its operating system. This is not an upgrade to windows 8 from some other OS. Most of the apps that came on the computer won't load. They try then go back to the start screen. The apps I've loaded off my own programs are not giving me a problem, and not all the the apps on the computer are, just most of them. Based on what I've read this is  problem for this OS. I've done a restore point from an earlier date and and a complete system restore. Still the same thing happens. I'm really frustrated with this operating system and I understand whey it just about killed the computer market. Please help if you can. Some of the fixes that I've read about seem really complicated and some of the others had no affect at all. Keep in mind this is a brand new computer that I've had only a few days.I looked at the post above this one and am lost to know what it means.

  • Hi Johnny,

I understand your concern. You may run the ‘Windows 8 App Troubleshooter’, please refer to the link: http://bit.ly/ULClR4.

If you have any anti-virus installed on the system, you may uninstall it completely and then check if you are able to open the applications.

Keep me posted with the findings. I will be glad to assist you.

  • I followed your instructions but the result is still the same. Apps won't load. This is just one of the many suggestions I've followed trying to get this problem resolved. I've come to the conclusion that it's just a junk program. Hopefully Microsoft will get their act together and get this idiocy fixed. I really don't have time to just sit around and try to get this done I've already spent several hours working on it.
  • Hi johnnyg1948,

Sometimes the McAfee Real Time Scanner causes a problem; however if you uninstalled McAfee for your troubleshooting, that isn't it. Have you reviewed the suggestions at these reliable sources?

  • For some posters above: the reason why your hard drive is locked is because you have an mSATA drive that Intel uses as cache for Windows. You can temporarily disable it by booting from a Linux Live CD and execute "sudo dmraid -E -r /dev/sdX" (where X = [a, b, c, d, e, f, ..., z]).

  • 1. normally this: 5) Tried Refreshing Win8 but harddrive is locked... indicates a backup is in process... stop all scheduled backups - then disable. then reboot an you can install... BeerHDDs are locked during backup[/c]

  • Hi Johnny,

It seems that issue is with the operating system. You may try refreshing Windows. Please refer to the link: http://bit.ly/TLZ9mS.

*Note: The apps that came with your PC or you installed from Windows Store will be reinstalled, but any apps you installed from other websites and DVDs will be removed. Windows puts a list of the removed apps on your desktop after refreshing your PC.

Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist you.

. You may try refreshing Windows.

A link to information on refreshing Windows was included at the Windows 8 Forums posted above. See post #4. The tutorial includes screenshots with a couple of options.
