Windows 7 x64 drivers for Vostro 1500

This question is not answered

Hi,

I have Vostro 1500, which has XP SP2 installed on it. Now, I wish to upgrade OS to Win 7 professional x64 bit. However the problem I have is - once I upgrade to Win 7 x64 OS, where do I get drivers for the same? When I searched in the Dell site, the drop down menu from drivers page doesn't list Windows 7 option to choose from, but however Win Vista 32 bit is being listed.

I observe that Win 7 x64 drivers are available for Vostro 1520 series. Is it suggestible to download these drivers and install them or should I use the available Win Vista 32 Bit drivers? ( Most of the people suggested that almost all Vista drivers support Win 7)

So how do I get access to Windows 7 x64  drivers that would work on my Vostro 1500.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you.

  • If you are going to try Vista drivers, you'll want 64-bit drivers not 32-bit to go with your 64-bit operating system.

If there are not any Vista 64-bit drivers or they are unuseable, you will need to search for the drivers yourself.

  • Thanks for the quick reply.

Yes, true that. As of now, Dell is providing Windows Vista 32 bit drivers for Vostro 1500, in such case I need to go for Windows 7 32 bit OS rather than 64 bit. But the concern I have is will those Vista drivers be compatible?

And, also if I install Win7 drivers of Vostro 1520 on Vostro 1500, will I run into any troubles?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Sorry I don't know.

My only experience has been with the Precision M6300 where the Vista drivers worked fine for Windows 7.

You might want to run Microsoft's Windows 7 upgrade advisor to see what it says.

  • Hi Knerg,

Dell has not tested Vostro 1500 system with Windows 7 so drivers are not available officially. Also, the hardware of Vostro 1500 is significantly different from Vostro 1520. So, drivers of one system might not work on another. You may try installing Windows 7 32 bit and try installing the Vista 32 bit drivers available on support site in compatibility mode and see if it helps. The other workaround would be to identify the missing drivers from device manager using the HW Id's and downloading/installing them from their individual manufacturer websites.

Please reply if you have any questions.

  • Thanks Sundeep B for your time in looking into this.

I was away for some time, so didn't get a chance to try what you have suggested. Once I do it, will definitely come back & post my observations, so that it will be helpful to all the members.

    Once again, thanks. Smile

  • First run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check that the system is 64 bit compatible. I think it should be but some models were restricted by the processor.

Follow Unofficial Windows Reinstallation Guide/A Clean Install of Windows 7:

    Windows Reinstallation Guide

Use the following Unofficial driver Set (mainly obtained from other Dell Systems or directly from the vendor):

    Vostro 1500 - Windows 7 64 Bit

    Vostro 1500 - Windows 7 32 Bit

For best results ensure the Vostro 1500 has 4 GB of RAM installed (otherwise the 32 bit version is better). You may also consider upgrading to a Solid State Drive before installing Windows 7.

I also have a 1500, and windows 7 64 bit will NOT work, you must use windows 7 32 bit and use the vista drivers.

  • Use the Windows 7 32 Bit drivers I listed above. Likely your processor isn't 64 Bit compatible. Edit the link is to the old driver set, it has now been updated:

  • If Windows 7 x64 will install, you can seek out the drivers from their respective hardware vendors. Sometimes, Windows Catalog will have them, too.

  • Great to  hear someone did it.  How about sharing your solution for drivers, computer configuration?

  • Where did you obtain your Dell Vostro drivers for the x64 bit version?

Did they all install fine from Windows 7x64-bit retail copy, perhaps?

    Thanks!
