Installing Word 2000 in Windows 8

This question has suggested answer(s)

Is it possible to use my old installation disc for Microsoft Works including Word 2000 into my new  Dell with Windows 8.  I got it with a previous Dell computer and have the registration number etc.  All I want is basic Word processing, not the full Office product.

  • Hi chumvi,

Microsoft Word 2000 is not compatible with Windows 8. For information on compatibility, please visit the following link:

You can try installing Microsoft Word 2000 using the Windows 8 Compatibility Mode and check if it works by following steps provided below:

    1. Right-click the program's icon and choose “Properties.”
    2. When the “Properties” dialog box appears, click the “Compatibility” tab and then click the “Run Compatibility Troubleshooter” button.
    3. In the “Compatibility Mode” section, select the “Run This Program in Compatibility Mode For” check box and select the program's desired Windows version (Windows XP or Windows 7) from the drop-down list.
    4. Click “OK” and then try running the program installer again to see whether it works better.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

  • I assume you have Microsoft Works 6.0 or 7.0 or older. Microsoft Works 9.0 can be downloaded from Digital River for free:

    Microsoft Works 9.0 Setup File

It will work on Windows 8 (I just tested it on the 64 bit version). It doesn't have a version of Microsoft Word bundled with it as in your version.

You should also try Microsoft Office WebApps which is free to use within your web browser and gives the basic functionality of Microsoft Office.

  • When you try to install using the compatibility mode recommended above, you should do BOTH the installatioin and running the program in compatibility mode for XP. In additioin, on the compatibility tab, also select Run as Administrator, both for the installation anfd running the program. Doing it this way has allowed me to install many XP programs that others say will not run in the newer operating systems.
