Windows 7 for Dell Inspiron 640m

This question is not answered

Hi,

I have seen that 'Inspiron 640m' is not listed in Compatible notebooks list on Dell support site. But, I am still curious if anybody has tried installing Windows 7 on Inspiron 640m (windows XP) and would like to hear how did it go?

Do we have all drivers available?

Please give some insight.

Thanks,

Suraj

  • I have installed it on an Inspiron 6400 (very similar hardware) and it works perfectly.

You have Vista 64 bit drivers and Vista 32 bit drivers and in general if Vista works, 7 works (7 is slightly lighter than Vista).

In your case as mine use the Vista Drivers:

    1. Notebook Software

    2. Intel Chipset

    3. Ricoh Chipset/Card Reader

    4. Video (Install then visit Windows Update to get the latest version - may be under optional updates)

    5. Conexant (Windows 7 has newer versions)

    6. Ethernet (Windows 7 has newer versions)

    7. Touchpad

    8. Sigmatel Audio (I just used the Driver in 7 and its been fine however install it if you want)

    9. Wireless (Can get off Intel Website if Intel Card or can use the Dell Vista driver).

    10. Quickset

    11. Bluetooth (Do not use the Vista Driver as it crashes Windows Explorer use instead R226750), Dell Support Centre.

Instructions for full install are available below. Note you may use one of the retail .iso files in the guide I have mentioned without a product key for (I think) 30 days to evaluate 7 you are before using up a key. If you don't like it you can restore your old OS with the Dell DVD. If you decide to get 7 you should be able to just input the key (if the same version).

Max to 4 GB of RAM for the best experience if you have not already done so via here.

  • Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor ... it will give you a good idea whether the hardware and software on your system will be compatible:

    www.microsoft.com/.../details.aspx

After that, yes Vista drivers will "usually" work (unless there is an OS check), but I usually like to get the Windows 7 drivers from the individual device manufacturers' websites (Broadcom, Intel, Realtek, etc.).

  • Yes, i have have installed windows 7 32 bit on my Dell inspiron 640m and it works great. I have also got all the drivers for it too.

  • Seems the unofficial driver link does not exist anymore :(

  • I have been working on migrating the unofficial driver sets to my Wordpress website, it'll take a while for me to list them all there, the Inspiron models are listed there however:
