replaced brand new PERC 5i battery, but still showing up as failed

received a bad ROMB battery error on this PE2950, ordered a bunch of brand new PERC 5i batteries from Dell.  after replaced the battery, the amber on the server LCD went away, but the battery is still showing up as failed in OMSA and is not charging.  tried two different batteries, same problem.  do i have to manually choose the start learning cycle task?  i didn't have to in prior experience.  another issue could be the PERC firmware and driver are both out of date, but i've replaced PERC batteries in such servers before and never had this issue.

  • I would update the firmware on the controller, the driver should be updated as well, but doesn't affect the battery.  The battery can take from 24-48 hours to fully charge.  If it is not charging after updating the firmware after that period of time, the controller may be failing as well.

  • i chose the start learning cycle task on the battery page, i never had to do that, can you explain what does it do if i chose that option?

  • You chose the learning cycle instead?  Why?  Just curious.  The learning cycle completely drains the battery of charge, then fully charges it - it does this to "learn" the current capacity of the battery.  It doesn't do you any good right now ... it is best to let it sit until tomorrow ... if it is still showing as failed, then you can look at other alternatives.

  • ^^^ i wish you posted this earlier... initially after i replaced the battery, the status was failed, not charging at all, so you were saying if i leave it like that for 24 hours or so, it may start charging?  the numerous PERC battery replacements i've done before all start right away after the server boots up.

  • It can depend on the current charge of the battery.  It may be charging but may not update the status for hours - until it has some progress to change the old status.  It won't "start" charging after 24-hours, but it may take several hours before the controller is confident that the new battery is adequate to change the battery status from Failed.  My last battery change (last week) did not show a new status for about 30 minutes.  This may also be firmware-dependent.  What is the firmware version of this system compared to one that showed the battery status change immediately?

  • this server is due for another reboot later today for the Windows patch, would the battery state change from learning to charging or failed state?

  • Its possible. I would update the firmware prior to the windows update, and then you only have 1 restart. It may be a mismatch in bios\controller firmware and windows updates.
