I have an old PowerEdge 1950 with PERC 5/i.
I would like to replace the two RAID 1 3.5 SATA hard drive with a new ones and I would like to ask if there is a way to replace the first one and let PERC rebuild the mirror and then replace the second one and let PERC rebuild the mirror again?
Guided steps will be much appropriated.
I forgot - you originally said 3.5", meaning you have only the capacity for two disks ... when you said "OMSA under Physical Disks both hard drives are "no" under hot spare", I thought you meant the two new disks you put in (newer 1950's can take four 2.5" disks).
Yes, you will need to replace each one, allowing the first to completely finish rebuilding before replacing the other.
NEVER power down a server to replace a failed hot-swap drive. Do it "hot".
Yes, you can do that, BUT your array will be the same size when you are done as when you started. You cannot increase the size of the array in this manner. If you replace/rebuild one at a time, the only thing you can do with the extra disk space is create a second array across the disks. This will appear as a separate "disk" to the OS, so its space cannot be joined with existing space (in case you were trying to expand existing partitions. If you "must" have a single array with all the storage space available in a single unit, then you must do a backup/restore to a new/larger RAID 1.
I will use the same capacity hard drives, I just want to replace them with new ones as the current one are old, just to be on the safe side.
After I will replace the first hard drive, do I need to do something from the BIOS at PERC controller or the server will recognize a new hard drive and will rebuild the RAID 1 to the new hard drive?
If you want to replace them pro-actively, then that's up to you.
It will probably start the rebuild automatically. If not, then you will need to assign the disk as a hot-spare, either in the CTRL-R utility or using OMSA.
At OMSA under Physical Disks both hard drives are "no" under hot spare.
I don't see any option to change one to be hot spare.
They are "no", because they haven't been set as hot-spares yet. If the disks are showing under Physical Disks as Ready, then you can select Assign Global Hot Spare from the dropdown menu of Available Tasks for that disk. If the disks are showing as Foreign, then you must clear the foreign config first (Storage, PERC, Information/Configuration, Foreign/Clear from dropdown for controller). You can also assign a disk as a Dedicated Hot Spare under Storage, PERC, Virtual Disks, Assign Dedicated Hot Spare from dropdown menu of Available Tasks for the RAID 1.
According to OMSA I can't set a hot spare as I have only tow hard drive installed on my server and they are on RAID 1.
Can I replace each on of them while server is running or do I need to shut it down for the each hard drive replacement?
Thanks for your help!
