Replacement hard drive not active

Hi All,

We had a failed hard drive in our server. I ordered a replacement drive from dell and did a simple swap. This was last week Tuesday. Now on our Server Hard drive bay 0,1,2 are blinking in sequence but bay 3 has not blinked once. Bay 3 has the replacement hard drive.

Server Details:  Power Edge R410

                             iDRAC6- ver 1.70

                              4 disc raid.

I find it odd that the server could still be rebuilding the drive and think that the drive needs to be configured. I plan to restart the server and during the boot sequence press "Ctrl + R"? That would allow me to configure my hard drive.

Is that correct?

  • Do you have a local or group policy that changes any of IE's security settings?  The Intranet Zone should log you in automatically (so long as you are using an local or domain admin account).  You should see a warning about the site's certificate, but you should be able to click continue and login.  You should not need to reboot this system (under MOST circumstances).  OMSA must also be installed by a local or domain admin.  Are you trying to access it from within the server in questions (https://localhost:1311), or remotely (https://remoteservernameorip:1311)?

    Which controller to you have?

    After simply swapping the new drive in, did you do anything else?  Where did the replacement disk come from?  Refurb?  New?

    -I'm not sure what raid it is. I took over from another IT person.

    -Each drive is 1TB Sata 7.2 K.

    - Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard

    -No

    - I didn't make any changes.

    - The drive came from Dell

    - New drive as far as i could tell, the server is still under warranty

  • 1TB SATA drives can take a full day to rebuild.

    You need to install OMSA to answer the important unanswered questions above.

    Download and run to extract files, then run C:\Openmanage\windows\setup.exe.  Choose Custom and make sure Storage Management is installed.

    Add the yourservernameoripaddress:1311 to IE's Intranet Zone, then open, go to Storage, PERC:

    What is your PERC (H200, H700, 6/i, S300)?

    Under Virtual Disks, what is the RAID level (5 or 10)?

    What is the status of the Virtual Disk?  Are all physical disks online (Backplane/Connector, Physical Disks), or any showing Ready or Foreign?

    If you just swapped the drive, that will not be enough ... I suspect the drive is showing as Ready (possibly Foreign, if refurbished (allowed under terms of support contract, as "bulk", unpackaged drives cannot be called "new")).

    I downloaded and installed OMSA. when i try to log on i get the error message : " Logon failed" "Certificate error".

    I tried with the host name and ip.

    I did add my server name:1311 to the intranet zone as requested.

    Tried the suggestions from that link but no luck. I have not restarted the Server as it is live and can only be restarted after hours.

    What do you think could be the issue?

    Started following its steps.

    During the install at custom setup... its only showing Server Administrator Web Service.

    Anyway i continued... but i still can't log on... still says " Logon failed" "Certificate error".

  • Hi The Flash1932,

    I figured out a few things about our setup.

    1. On our Dell server we have Virtual machines installed so  that's why OMSA would not work correctly.

    2. I did reboot and  went to the Raid console before the Server started up. We have raid 5 and the hard drive that failed was the Hot spare :) , then i added the new drive as the hot spare.
