Dell 962 AIO Printer With Dell Dimension 4700

This question is not answered

I have a Dell 962 AIO Printer set up with a Dell Dimension 4700. The printer makes copies and faxes on it own but when I try to use it with the computer, I get a message that they are not communicating. I have tried everything in the way of Dell and Microsoft downloads to make the two work together but no luck. It seems the more I try, the worse it gets.

The latest problem is that when asked to install the printer, the computer asks for the CD that came with the computer. I can't use the CD/DVD because it gives a message 41 that the CD/DVD is not recognized. The audio portion of the computer is also mal functioning.

I recently installed a 640 GB main drive to replace the original main drive after a power outage. After many hours of updating and downloading, the computer works and I was able originally to use the CD/DVD drive to install the XP operating system and Office Professional, but then the CD/DVD failed to operate just after I ran the back up restore portion of the Norton 360.

I really need this computer printer and will appreciate any advice you have to offer.

Thank you

  • CitizenServed,

Sorry for the delay. We just got hit with two snowstorms and then I had to do the job of a co-worker that's on vacation and have a little time to answer.

You recently installed the hard drive. Let's start there first. Did you install the drivers in the correct order?

The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first(if applicable), then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.

Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

Idea Hint Idea When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.

Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software(if applicable)
    Chipset or SMBus driver
    Processor Driver (if applicable)
    Video
    Audio (sound)
    Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
    Modem
    Network Card

    QuickSet(Laptop only)

Just click on the blue subject line in your email and then click reply here. That way we can keep track on what's happening.

We need to download the drivers in Internet Expolorer. How to by-pass the Dell Download Manager

The desktop/notebook Utility and the chipset drivers need installed first, or the other drivers will fail to install. These need to be installed as the printer needs to connect to a usb port and without those drivers, the usb ports will NOT work.

After you install the drivers in the correct order, we'll then work on the printer.

This time it went smoother. I have a question about the modum download. Two were available one recommended and one optonal, I downloaded both as follows: P-74546 32 bit self extractor module and one P-133743 32 bit self extractor module and one modum helper. When I went to use the modum to get onto the web, I have been receiving a 720 error message unrecognized protocol or path. Nothing has changed except the addition of these downloads. Can I undo these or correct before we go on to the printer problem?  Thank you for you time.

  • CitizenServed.

A couple of things. Try running Finding System Information and at the bottom, you should be able to see what wirless cards/adapters you have. You'll need these. If you have any problems, then post back.

Try reinstalling the printer using the instructions located at...

    962 All-In-One Inkjet Printer owners thread (W7)

You'll need to run the patch to make sure the printer is completely removed. Also check using Manual Printer Driver Removal, then restarting the computer is a must.

Installing the printer using the proper drivers should become easy, this time.

I have to leave for work and will not be on until tomorrow.

Sorry for the delay. Had a visit from the Grand Kids today. What an enthusiastic group. I'm eshausted. I can't seem to open the Finding System Information properly. Does it maintain records back to 07/02/05 when I purchased my Dell Dimension 4700 and 962 Printer from Dell?  Please clarify and I will be glad to work on that.

By the way the Modem is working fine now. It only needed a tweek including resetting the security nothing like the protocol or other heavy adjustments.

Thank you again. I appreciate your help.

  • CitizenServed,

You probable have XP as that doesn't work with XP. Since you have everything working, for the way you sound, then you won't need to worry about this. It would just tell you what network cards/adapters you have. You can sometimes see this in the device manager unless it does not find them. Sometimes neither one will find them if they failed.

Glad you got it working Yes Thanks for posting back.

    Take care,

Subject: Printer 962 for Dell Dimension 4700 with XP Operating System

When I went into step one shown in your above message--- the control panel to remove the drivers from the AIO 962 Printer, a message came up that the printer had to be installed because 'dbxDR5C.DLL' is missing and I will need to use original disc. I have the original disc from Dell but the CD/DVD not working?

I took a next step and went into the drives and downloads and attempted to download firmware to fix the CD/DVD but it would not open for me and said an administrator needed to complete the task.

At the moment I am stuck. What do I do?

    Thank you

On the CD/DVD problem the error code is not 39.  The error code which comes up for this is 41.

It says "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware, but can not find the

    hardware device. (code 41) "

Let me know if you need other details.

    Thank you

  • CitizenServed,

Explanation of error codes generated by Device Manager in Microsoft Windows XP Professional says...

    Code 41

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

    Recommended resolution

This problem occurs if you install a driver for a non-Plug and Play device, but Windows cannot find the device. Here are some things that you can try to resolve this problem.

If the Troubleshooting Wizard does not resolve the problem, do one of the following:

    • If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, connect the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver.
    • If the hardware was not removed, the driver files might be obsolete. In this case, update the driver from Device Manager. In the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to update the driver.
    • If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, you may have to install a newer version of the driver. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type hdwwiz.cpl.

  • Hi Rick

I tried option one when attempting to reinstall the driver message came up that the software I have is the best.

When I tried option two the same message came up but with a couple of more steps.

I don't know if the  CD/DVD is a non-plug and play device. The Dimension 4700 with XP home edition with service pack 2 and AIO 962 printer were purchased

    in July 2 of 2005.

Do you have any more options I could try?

    Thank you

  • CitizenServed,

What do you see in the device manager. It sounds like it's being seen. Any Yellow exclaimination marks or red x"s?

    Try THIS
