Inspiron not connecting to internet

This question is not answered

Hello,

I have an older Dell that is not connecting to the internet.  It's always been challenging using a wireless router.  Apparently, there is some Dell software for the WLAN card that competes with Windows XP.  The only way I ever got it to work was have a friend do some "run" functions.  However, now it's not connecting with the cable or the router.  A friend got it working with the router by changing some settings but then got messed up again on a restart.  Can anyone help me? I'm computer illiterate.

    Try...

How to login to your wireless router and use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings. I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Click on network, your network adapter, power management. Uncheck the box to allow Windows to turn off this device to save power.

Also click on advanced and look and see if your adapter has Antenna Diversity. Some have this and some don't if your adapter has this, change the Antenna Diversity from Auto to Aux.

    Try running WinSock XP Fix

What is a Dell Service Tag and how do I locate it?

  • Hello, thanks for the tip. However, I cannot connect to the internet at all, not even with the cable so I am unable to run the suggested program.

  • antied77,

Try running an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.

You could download WinSockXPFix on the computer you're using and put it on a flash drive to put on the other computer.

  • antied77,

It was supposed to be ipconfig /all

Did you try the manual method?

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Click on network, 1390 adapter. Look for antenna diversity. Change it from Auto to aux.

    Try to connect. What happens?

  • I did do ipconfig/all. it's just that i mistyped it the first two times.

I also ran the winsox fix for xp.

I tried going into the 1394 net adapter.  It was disabled.  I enabled it and tried finding antennae but there was nothing like that. If I go to properties there's a general, driver, and details tab.

  • antied77,

The 1394 is a not a wireless adapter.

Have you recedntly reinstalled the operating system?

How to start Wireless Zero Configuration using Vista/Windows 7

How can I disable wireless configuration services and enable the Windows XP Wireless Zero Configuration services

  • the 1394 is for something called net adapter. is that the same thing as a wireless adapter?   It's under my network connections.

no, I have not reinstalled the operating system.

I ran the windows xp wireless zero configuration for xp and it's still not working.

  • antied77,

You have a Dell Inspiron (whay model?) with XP

    Your ipconfig /all log shows...

Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection 2:

            Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

            Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-Card

    roller

            Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-15-C5-A3-F6-E0

Was the operating system recently installed?

Places to check to see if the Connection is enabled

You went to device manager, network, 1390 adapter, advanced and changed the antenna diversity from auto to Aux, correct?

Hit the Windows key and the R keys at the same time. Type

    command

    hit enter, then type

    ipconfig /release

    Then restart your computer.

    What happens?

  • It's connected. making that connection is allowing me to use the computer with the cable.

yes, I changed the dell wlan to aux.

when I typed ipconfig /release I lost internet connectivity. i had to type ipconfig /renew to get it back. my wireless connnection no says, limited or no connectivity.

  • before it had connectivity, but the wireless was not working. now it doesn't have connectivity

  • antied77,

You can use system restore and go back to the last restore point and you have your connectivity back.

I was hoping that you typed ipconfig /release, then RESTART your computer.

Does the computer connect when it is near the wireless router?
