Inspiron 531S NIC Problem

I have an Inspiron 531S with the Nvidia nForce onboard NIC.  I recently was victim of some malware, which I was able to remove, however, my NIC now has been reprogrammed with an autoconfiguration IPv4 address of 169-254-173-226 witha subnet mask of 255.255.0.0.  My network has aa address of 192.168.1.***.  I have tried repairing the connection, which sees the local network but the internet, with no success.  Every so often it shows to have the correct network address, but still will not access the internet.  I have connected with no problen via a wireless adapter and a USB-to-Ethernet adapter.  It is just this onboard connection that give me fits.  Has anyone else run across this and is there a fix?

    Guessing your operating system is Vista or Windows 7, try going to...

     

    Start, control panel, networking and sharing center, connection, view statis, properties, continue, Internet Protocol Version 4(TCP/IPv4)

    You should see something like the picture below. Make your setting match this.

  • Sorry. OS is Vista.  I had 7 on it, but when the infection hit I ended up reinstalling the original OS.  When I first start it up I get this:

     

    After I do the "reset network adapter", I get:

     

    but it still will not connect to the internet.  "Local Connection" only.  I have checked the settings you suggested with everything set as it should.  I have never run into this before and am baffled.  I have tried turning off the IPv6 options, which does not work either.  I appreciate any insights...

    Did you try powering off the isp modem/router and the wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds, then wait about a minute or two and try to connect?

     

    You reinstalled the operating system! Did you install the drivers in order?

     

     

    The Desktop/Notebook Utility needs to be installed first(if applicable), then the chipset drivers. If they are NOT installed first, then the rest of the drivers will fail to install.

     

     

     

     

    Since the operating system was re-installed did you remember to go to drivers and downloads, enter your service tag(DO NOT POST SERVICE TAG here or your post will get deleted, since it contains your personal information), and install these drivers in this order.

     

    Idea Hint Idea When downloading the drivers, make a folder for each drivers and name it with the device it belongs with to make it easier to install them in the proper order.



    Desktop System Software or Notebook System Software(if applicable)
    Chipset or SMBus driver
    Processor Driver (if applicable)
    Video
    Audio (sound)
    Input Drivers (keyboard/mouse)
    Modem
    Network Card

    QuickSet(Laptop only)

  • I tried uninstalling all of the above drivers and reinstalling in this order - no good.  I did a complete reinstall of Windows from a formatted drive & reinstalling all drivers in prescribed order - still no good.  Could the internal NIC just be bad?

    It could be possible that the wireless function has died and/or the antenna came lose. Is the desktop near your wireless router?

     

    Try running WinSock XP Fix just to be sure.

  • It is not a wireless connection.  It is the factory onboard NIC on the motherboard.  I have to connect thru a USB to ethernet connection to get online.  THe USB works great, I can even hook up via a wireless connection without a problem.  It is just this onboard connection that gives me fits.
