Connectivity issues - Inspiron 620 MT w/ Dell Wireless 1502 (802.11b/g/n) WLAN mini-card.

Just opened the box and I'm attempting set up our new Inspiron 620 MT w/Dell Wireless 1502 (802.11b/g/n) WLAN mini-card. Running a Linksys WRT160N Router with MAC filtering enabled. Have entered the 1502 MAC address in the list. I've tried to manually connect to the network without success. Suggestions to enable me to connect? How can I determine if this is a hardware failure with the card or something else? Three other computers and 3 iPods all connect without problem to the router.

  • I also have just received an Inspiron 620 MT with Dell wireless 1502 (802.11n) WLAN mini-card. I just tried to connect with my linksys router with no success. I have 3 existing computers and 3 ipods connected without problem. Not happy right now. I guess it's off to the phone lines.

    What type of security are you using in your Linksys WRT160N router?

     

    What channel?

     

    The Dell Wireless 1502 Wireless-N WLAN Half-Mini Card works on the 2.4GHz band only.

     

    Can you run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.

    Try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

  • Why would I need to make a new SSID? How does that impact all the other devices I have connected to our wireless router?

    Per your link, why should I NOT use MAC filtering?

    I would really prefer not to have to go back in and change everything for every device hooked up to router, just to get this computer to connect. There has to be an easier way (I hope).

    Meanwhile - is there a way to test the card to make sure there isn't a hardware issue since I've read that this has been a problem with the cards shipped with these units?

    Steep learning curve, especially when you don't do this everyday. Oh for the days of DOS when life was simple. :)

    Some adapter work better on channels 1, 6 or 11.

     

    Check your virus program and firewall.

     

    Try the computer at a local hotspot. If it connects, then it's the setup with your roputer.

  • Easier said than done. Don't really feel like lugging a desktop and monitor to Panera or Starbucks. Any other suggestions?

    Sorry about that. I thought I googled the model and found it to be a laptop. Oops! Embarrassed

     

    Was the operating system recently installed/reinstalled? If yes, were the drivers installed in the correct order? How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

     

    Did you install the drivers for the adapter before attaching it?

     

    Is the computer under warranty? If yes, contact Dell Tech support. They want to remote in to the computer and maybe they can fix it remotely.

  • All I've done is look for the MAC address to add it to the MAC filtering for my router and try to setup a connection. I can "see" my network now, but I can't connect. Not certain why.

    In terms of the OS - Dell surely "recently" installed it. I would hope that they did it properly. I have not uninstalled/reinstalled anything. I KNOW what a pain that can be and would like to avoid taking those steps.

    As for the adapter drivers - I would assume that Dell installed those properly as well.

    Yes, my computer should be under warranty since it has only been in my possession a few days. I haven't registered it yet because I can't get to the internet. Fingers crossed I don't have the same issues I had registering the last Dell I purchased via AAFES. It took 3+ months to register it because it said I was overseas first, then it said I was the 2nd owner after AAFES. There still appears to be some glitches with the Dell/AAFES EPP program. But that's another issue and doesn't need to be addressed here (and hopefully it won't have to be at all).

  • Interesting. I set up the new Inspiron 620 MT with Dell Wireless 1502 (802.11b/g/n) WLAN mini-card at the same desk with the Dimension E510 I'm replacing. The E510 has an Dell 1450 Wireless USB Adapter. The E510 connects fine with a strong signal. The 620 MT can see the network, but the signal is so low it won't connect. The computers are located upstairs in an open loft about 20 feet from the router in the downstairs office.

    I just moved the 620 MT adjacent to the router. Lo and behold! It connects! BUT...it only has a good signal, not excellent. For being less than 4 feet way it should be receiving LOUD AND CLEAR.

    Guess it's time to call Dell for a replacement mini-card.

    Anyone else have a similar problem?

  • Embarrassed OK now I feel a bit stupid. I did not know that this wireless card required you to attach antennae to the back of the desktop to improve the signal. I talked to the tech and after digging through all the packing found 2 short black pencil like "sticks" that screw into the back of my desktop. I found these in the very bottom of the box, under the bottom box flap. No wonder I never noticed them before.

    All the rest of my computers are laptops so I've never had to deal with a removable antennae. The old laptop uses a wireless usb card and it doesn't have an antenna.

    You learn something new everyday. Duh.

  • Hey, sorry to come on this on the back end.  I got my 620 about a week ago and like OfficeDummy didn't notice my antennae until today.  In the meantime, I installed and have been using an older linksys adapter, which worked ok.  Now that I got the antennae installed my Dell 1502 can finally "see" my wireless networks, but whenever I try to connect I get a "Windows was unable to connect to [my SSID]."   I've been through all the troubleshooter, and no solution.  I've tried connecting with my other (Linksys) adapter uninstalled, but still no luck.

    I'd rather use the Dell adapter I paid for, since it shows a better signal strength, but cannot seem to make it work.  The diagnostics I've run show that the hardware is operating fine, but then I don't know much.  If anyone could provide me a solution for this, I'd appreciate it.
