My laptop starts up but immediately shuts down. However it works perfectly if I connect an external monitor. The main display never comes on.
I have tried reseating the drives and memory.
I have taken the battery out and unplugged the power supply. Then held the power button for 60 seconds.
The screen has no image not even a faint image.
I have ran the Dell diagnostics and no errors were encountered.
The screen was working fine and all of a sudden went black. When I restarted it that is when it failed.
On a side note the left click on the palm rest also stopped working. The right click works and so does the pad to move the cursor. Not sure if its related.
May I know the system model and the Operating system installed on the computer?
Connect an external display to the computer.
Do you hear fans running?
Check if the computer boots into Safemode with networking. Restart the computer and tap F8 at Dell logo and select Safemode with networking.
Also, run PSA diagnostics. Restart the computer by holding the FN and Power button simultaneously. Let the diagnostics complete.
Awaiting your response!

Dell Studio 1749.
I have connected an external monitor and when I do the laptop runs perfectly. Just like it did before.
No need for safe mode because the laptop when not connected to an external monitor it shuts down about 3 seconds after it starts.
I have also ran PSA Diagnostics and no errors were detected.
When not connected to an external monitor the fan starts and the media panel lights up and then shuts off.
OS is WIndows 7 Ultimate x64
The problem appears to be with the lid sensor. When doing the test opening and closing the lid failed. I was told there is a ground wire from the monitor to the motherboard. However I do not see one. I have verified that the LCD cable is firmly connected at both ends. Is the ground wire part of the power button?
This could be an issue with the LCD cable.
Refer the following link which has steps to connect the LCD cable:
***Ensure the LCD cables ar connected.
Before Opening the chassis, I recommend you to remove the battery and disconnect the adapter, press and hold the power button for few seconds and release to drain the flea power.
Note: Reseat the LCD cable if you are comfortable in doing so.
** NOTE: Please ensure that the power cable of the computer is disconnected before opening the chassis. Refer to the Service Manual for assistance on removing or replacing the internal components of the computer.
