Dell xps m1530 Video Card Issues

This question is answered

Hi, I've had a problem with my Video Card on my xps m1530-

I've been unable to connect an external monitor to my laptop (via either HDMI or VGA), and I initially assumed it my drivers needed updating or re-installation. So far, though, any attempted software fix has been an abysmal failure, and now I'm thinking there's a hardware malfunction of some sort.

Running diagnostics on the video card, it reads that the Video memory test and Primary surface test cannot be run, though it passes the PCI express status test. The adapter is supposed to be an nvidia card, but my computer only currently identifies the Standard VGA Graphics adapter. It is also unable to read graphics memory. If my hardware has indeed failed, as I suspect, how much would it cost to fix it?

[Alternatively, my brother recently purchased a new laptop and he left his old xps m1530 with me. Would it possible to swap his (likely functioning) video card into my own laptop? If so, would this be difficult to accomplish on my own?]

I would really appreciate the help! I consider myself rather computer literate, but this issue has got me stumped. :)

  • There's no separate video card in this model - it's a chip on the mainboard.   Since it sounds like yours has failed, you'd have to replace the mainboard to repair the system.
