I now received my the dell u3014 monitor last night and have not, as of yet been able to hook it up to either of my laptops. I have a Dell XPS 13 (L321X) which has a minidisplay port out, and a Dell StudioXPS 1340, which has a regular displayport out.
Dell included a mini-displayport to displayport cable along with the monitor, and I have tried this cable with both laptops but no video signal is displayed.
I get the following messages with each laptop:
With the XPS 13: the monitor says 'no displayport cable is connected'
With the Studio XPS 1340: "this monitor will now enter powersafe mode'
The monitor does work via HDMI and DVI just fine, but obviously those will not allow me to take advantage of the maximum resolution.
Both laptops are running windows 7 64 bit with stock dell video drivers. I am at a loss for what to do and would appreciate any suggestions/help anyone has.
Update: Dell sent me a new, replacement monitor. With this new monitor I bought two cables:
mini-displayport to mini-displayport to connect the XPS 13 to the U3014:
regular displayport to regular displayport to connecct the Studio XPS 1340 to the U3014:
results: EVERYTHING WORKS AS IT SHOULD!
As soon as I hooked up the xps 13 to the monitor, the monitor instantly recognized it and went to the full resolution. The same is true when I tried to hook it up with the Studio XPS 1340.
So I dont know if it is a simple cable issue or if there's something wrong with the circuit board on the original U3014, and frankly I dont want to try my new cables with it, just in case and deal with another headache.
Either way, this resolves all my issues. Thanks for all your help in trying to diagnose the issue.
DVI will do the maximum resolution if the laptops support that high resolution. You should ask the guys on the Laptop video board to see if the laptop DP and DVI outs on those support 2560x1600 60Hz.

the following combinations worked:
XPS 13 to the U3014 via a mini-displayport to hdmi adapter (monoprice): worked (1920 x 1200 max res)
XPS 13 to the U3014 via a mini-displayport to DVI adapter (monoprice): worked (1920 x 1060 max res)
XPS 13 to the U3014 via a thunderbolt cable (official apple thunderbolt cable): no signal
Macbook Pro to the U3014 via mini-displayport cable to displayport cable that came with the monitor: did not work. (screen flickered on the macbook pro for a second but no image was ever displayed on the dell monitor)
I took the XPS 13 to the apple store to try hooking it up to one of their cinema displays with a similar resolution. I used their own cable, another apple thunderbolt cable: Did not work.
From these experiments I think that the XPS 13's displayport works fine, but there's something wrong with the monitor itself?I dont know if a minidisplay port cable is the same thing as a thunderbolt cable from apple, so I cannot tell why the xps 13 did not work with the apple cinema display.
Which end was the HDMI? The laptop or the U3014?
Which end was the DVI? The laptop or the U3014?
The xps 13 only has a mini displayport connector. No DVI or HDMI.
I used this:
so the minidisplay port connector was plugged into the xps 13 (L321X) and I tried HDMI, DVI cables out of it. In each case, those all worked fine.
It is only when I tried the mini-display port connector to displayport connector cable that shipped with the monitor is when I got no signal to the monitor.
Another potential symptom is that when I push the 'scan sources' option from the main menu of the U3014, nothing happens, it scans the inputs and still reverts back to whatever input was initially set, even when there's no signal on that input, and there's a signal on a different input.
Just a suggestion
Did you notice, that there are two Displayports? One of the is marked DP-Out, you have to use the other one. DP-Out is just used to clone the Signal fed into the U3014 to another display.
I originally did plug the laptop into DP out, and then realized there were separate ins and outs. Since then all 3 laptops were plugged into the DP in, input, and hasn't worked.
No idea. I am moving this to the laptop video board for more help.
It looks like that you are on the right track. It’s possible that they may be a problem on both the notebooks. I would check to make sure that the systems have the most up to date video drivers installed. If possible borrow another system from a friend or from work and test the monitor on the third notebook. It is unlikely that three different notebooks is going to be defective.
Test the notebooks display port connections on other monitors if possible. Test using other display port adapters. Find out if the problem follows the monitor, the display port adapters or the notebooks and please report back here with what you find out.

EDIT: I tried the new displayport to displayport cable with the original U3014, and now it works perfectly over displayport as it should. That leaves me to believe that there was something wrong with the cables i previously used (the miniDP to DP cable that shipped with the original u3014, and the apple thunderbolt cable)
Thanks for the update, so it was the cables that was the problem. I am glad to read that everything is up and running.
Hi, I am trying to connect my Dell XPS13 developer edition (ubuntu 12.04) to the Dell U3014 via a mini display to usb port as provided by Dell. However the laptop does not recognize the monitor. I was under the assumption the two are compatible - any help would be great.
