I recently upgraded to Windws 8. i was pretty excited as it was pretty cheap and everything seems to run smooth on the old machine.
However, I noticed that my webcam wasn't working. In the device manager I did find an unknown device that must be the webcam, since it is listed nowhere else. No matter what I do, I can't get the webcam installed. Other sites tell me I should got Dell's support site and download the latest driver.
On that page Windows 7 is barely supported so of course there is no driver to be downloaded there. I tried uninstalling the unknown and installing older (Vista) webcam drivers without luck.
Can somebody help me? Any advice is appreciated.
Look at the Inspiron 1545 Service Manual. Read page 46. I think this model has screws around the bezel. On other models, the bezel comes off by gently getting your fingernails under it. Some do have screws.
Once you pop the bezel loose at the top, unplug the webcam, then plug it back in.

Did you try the Vista 64-bit Creative Labs 1.3MP Camera, v.220.127.116.115, A00 drivers in the Vista SP2 Compatibility mode?
When you recently installed the operating system, did you install the Dell System Software(if applicable) and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct
Windows 7/8 is supposed to provide the webcam drivers for most Dell computers. If you system needs webcam drivers, go to Drivers & Downloads enter your service tag, then select your operating system. If your system needs webcam drivers, they'll be listed under Input.
(Windows 8)How to make the webcam work with help from this youtube. You have to open the Camera app first, and then click Settings on the charm bar to see where you can give the app permission to use the webcam.

You can try this file, also known as Dell Webcam Central.
Create a new unrestricted user account and try the webcam. Did the webcam work?
If yes, log out and log back in to your account and try the webcam. Did the webcam work?
If no, then the webcam became detached from the motherboard, usually near the webcam

thanks for the info. However it still doesn't seem to work I reinstalled everything in the correct order, but I get an error message when I try to install the wecam drivers. Surely Vista drivers are not optimal for Windows 8.
I thought it was strange, since there aren't any Windows 7 drivers for the webcam and it worked great under Windows 7.
Is there anything else I can try, since there ae no Windows 8 drivers available?
Like I mentioned earlier, Windows 7 and Windows 8 is supposed to probide the webcam drivers. There were a few models that needed webcam drivers.

Did you try this file, also known as Dell Webcam Central Version 1.40.05?
I have seen the webcam come loose from the motherboard, usually at the top of the screen, near the webcam. That's usually the place you open and close the laptop.
I belive you were right with your last assessment.Whenever I touch the plating near the webcam and press on it, it makes the sound as if I insert a usb adapter and the unknown device is gone. Howver, I also tried holding it in place like that and starting a webcam program but I guess it did become disconnected.
Is there a way I might be able to fix this myself? Can i open the lid somehow without destroying much?

I unscrewed the bezel and and unscrewed all the screws that connect to the camera. I couldn't get the camera removed, but I think tightening all the screws did the trick,a since the camer is working again.
Glad you got it working! Thanks for posting back. The camera sometimes comes loose, near the top of the screen. I think it's where you open the laptop, so it sometimes jars the connection.
