Display problem Inspiron 15R i5 with ATI HD 5470

This question is not answered

for the last few weeks i have been having display problems with my laptop.  when i use Office programs or IE, after a while i get this

as if there was a screenshot being taken and moving around the screen (see top left corner of the screenshot i took).  happens if i type or scroll the document.

what could this be caused by?  I cannot belive this laptop can overheat using basic Excel functions right?

any quick fix?  I turned Aero down, I even tried turning all optional graphic functions off, which only makes the problem appear at a later moment.

  • Hi pterio,

    Welcome to the Community,

Since the system is heating up and also you are having an issue with the display, you can try updating the BIOS and uninstall and reinstall the video card driver.

Click on Drivers and Downloads on the link below and use your system tag number to find the BIOS and Drivers for your system:

Let me know if this helps.

  • i downloaded the new BIOS, uninstalled and reinstalled the video card driver, it did not fix the problem

  • Than you can run the Dell 32 bit Diagnostics to confirm if its a hardware related problem.

To run the test follow the steps below:

    Restart the computer.

As the computer boots, press <F12> when the Dell Splash Screen appears.

When the Boot menu appears, highlight the Boot to Utility Partition option, or the Diagnostics option and then press <Enter> to start the 32-bit Dell Diagnostics.

Press the <Tab> key to highlight Test System Press <Enter> to continue to 32-bit Diagnostics.

    Post back any error code/message.

Also if possible try connecting an external display (monitor) to your system and check how the display is on the external display.Use the same applications which you normally use while the system is connected to external display.

Let me know how the display works on the external display.

    Thank You
