  • Dear Rick,

  • Jawid,

When you installed Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit) did you install the desktop/notebook utility and the chipset drivers first? If not the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order If you cannot find Windows 7 drivers, then try using the Vista (or XP) 32-bit drivers, for Windows 7 32-bit of the Vista (or XP) 64-bit drivers for Windows 7 64-bit and install the drivers in the Compatibility mode

The desktop/notebook system utility and the chipset drivers have the necessary drivers for attached devices on your operating system. It has the drivers for usb ports, webcam, wireless adapters, just to name a few. If the drievr are not installed, then installing ther drivers will fail.

What do you see in the device manager? Did you try uninstalling the device(s), with yellow exclaimination marks, then restart your computer? If the drivers are on the system, the computer should be able to find them and install the drivers.

  • Dear Rick,

The 1564 laptop that I have, was purchsed in its country of origin and the operating system (Windows7, 64 bit) was installed by the company when I received it first its Webcam was working properly, but after a few months it is giving the message ( please plug in a supported device ). as I said before, once few days ago I found its driver in the system and reinstalled it, but no luck, if I need to do anything through device manager please tell me how to do it and where from.

    Thanks,

  • Not at all it is not a company computer it is my private PC, what I meant is that the window 7 , 64bit was already installed on it and at the beginning its Webcam was working properly, but after a few months it is giving the message (Please plug in a supported device), I also reinstalled the Webcam driver, but still it is saying (please plug in a supported device) and doesn't show any pictures, I also checked it from deivce manager I found nothing wrong with it, no yellow thing ...etc, and it says this driver is working properly.

  • Jawid,

I would backup all my files and folders. Something just isn't installed correctly and/or corrupt.

Did you make the Windows 7 - IMPORTANT Windows 7 Backup Disks to create?

Options are to insert the Dell DataSafe Disk 1 and restart your computer anbd follow the instructions.

    Second method is easy...

Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings

    This method is more involved

  • Rick,

Do I need to install the Windows back after restoring my computer's software to the factory settings or I can still use the windows I have ?

    Jawid

  •  Jawid786,

I would create the Dell Data Safe disks. I have used them before and know that procedure.

Backup all your files and folders, especially the ones that you cannot afford to lose. This should be a normal practice.

Insert Dell Data Safe disk one and restart your computer.

Press any key to boot from cd/dvd

Then follow the instructions. I think it takes about an hour and prompts you questions. It may ask you if you want to backup files and folders. You'll need to install all Windows Updates, Virus porotection, and all mthe programs/software taht you installed before. It's like getting a new computer with everything working except you lost all your software.

The resovery image also does this and you do not have to sit there while the recovery is taking place. Restoring Your Computer´s Software to the Factory Settings

  • I answered this on another post, but will try to not be as long winded here.

This is a design issue, it is not a hardware of driver issue as many, including Dell have been saying.  On the inside of the bezel, the plastic part that surrounds the LCD screen, there are metalic sponges, these have to make contact with copper contacts on the camera module which is taped to the inside of the laptop lid with foil tape.  As the laptop ages the plastic "relaxes" and the space inside the lid increases just enough that the sponges aren't able to touch and make contact with the camera module on many of the laptops. On some folks have found they can squeeze the lid by the camera and it will work for a time, others, it will work as long as they keep squeezing, for others nothing happens.

You or others may ask, how do I know, I did a lot of research, then took my 1564 apart, found the problem, put some spacers in there and fixed the issue.

    Problem solved.

  • i have dell inspiron 1564 laptop and my webcam is not working, when i opened webcam it shows please plug in a supported device, please i need to slove my problem

  • @albadri: Did you read the previous post? This will solve your problem.

  • Medic you are my hero for the day.  Thanks for saving me another hour uninstalling the drives and software.  All I did was squeeze the lid and bam, my ugly mug is back.

  • I am so glad I found your post. I have been trying to figure out what was going on with my Dell Inspiron 14 for hours now, but I did as you said and squeezed the lid by the camera and it worked! Thanks a ton. Can you send me a description of the spacer installation that you did? I have never taken a computer apart before, so this will be my first time so I don't want to screw it up. Thanks!
