Warranty ran out last year. Have checked BIOS, tried the F keys and am unable to do a system back up & it won't do a factory restore. Managed to run diagnostics, error 2000 0142. So, I guess all we can do is get a new HDD & start from scratch. I know how to take the old HDD out and put a new one in..my query is what then? Without an operating system disk from DELL, how do I get it up and running again?
Doing a factory restore isn't going to do you any good since the hard drive is bad.
Dell is no longer providing OS disk for out-of-warranty PCs.
So, try your best to create a restore disk.
Otherwise, try Clonezilla. It is freeware and will allow you to create an image of the hard drive on an external hard drive and then let you re-store the image back to a new hard drive.

Windows 7 won't start, so I guess making a restore disk is out of the running (only have USB drives, no CD on netbook too).
The netbook shows the DELL logo, then looks like it starts to load windows but after a few minutes goes back to the DELL logo and so it keeps doing this over and over!
will look into clonezilla, thanks.
I have personal experience with Clonezilla, but it is based on Linux so you will need to print the tutorial http://www.howtoforge.com/back-up-restore-hard-drives-and-partitions-with-clonezilla-live
You might to look into http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
I have put clonezilla onto USB as duo has no CD drive. However, the netbook won't recognise it..have changed the BIOS , the USB flashes for a bit then it seems to go back to trying to start windows via the HDD!!
F12 at bootup to get one-time boot menu and select to boot from the USB drive.
You need to make sure that you "prepare" the USB on a different PC as directed to make it bootable. http://clonezilla.org/liveusb.php MS Windows Method A
Give http://www.easeus.com/backup-software/tb-free.html a try
you'll need to use your HP pc
Am in with the USB and EaseUS!. Just putting stuff from ext. hard drive onto PC so can clone using that
