I bought my Alienware mx17 r4 on may 3rd 2012, and had no problems. It was pretty much flawless, until a couple months ago, where I met this issue for the first time.
I restarted my pc and it was back to normal, not a big deal.. but as they days passed this started to more frequently. I looked around on the internet to see if anyone else had had the same issue and I met various "solutions". One of them told me to turn of my laptop, remove the battery and hold down the power button for 1 minute, which worked 2 or 3 times.
To my frustation, this issue did not intend to disappear, and I finally decided to make use of my warranty, which I then realized had expired, since I assumed I'd have 2 years of warranty like any other product, not 1 year. I therefore cannot call nor directly contact Dell.
Is there any real solution to this? Or do I really, as a student, have to invest 250 - 300$ on a new charger?

I would like to know if you are receiving any error message on the system or is it just the battery not charging when the AC adapter is connected.
You can also refer to video in the link below for further troubleshooting on the battery and let me know the results.

I am not receiving any messages, not that I know of. It just says "plugged in, not charging" when I hover my mouse over the battery. I don't have Battery Meter on my computer by the way.
There is a possibility that the battery or motherboard might have failed.
Request you to try using a known good battery (if available) and check if it works. If the issue gets fixed then replace the battery. If the issue still persists then the motherboard may have to be replaced. Also you may check if the AC Adaptor is getting detected in BIOS (F2 at startup).
