How to make image of windows 8 set up

This question has suggested answer(s)

I just recently purchase Dell inspiron 15 3521 laptop, but I did not receive any CD/DVD with it. I tried to search out in Dell forum and found that this can be created through Dell Backup and recovery software, but still I have few questioned which need clarification.

1) Window image can be created with USB flash drive. What should be the size of USB flash drive. Means, 16 GB, 32GB or more

2) After making image on USB flash drive, how to reinstall window 8. Means, this can done by selecting boot up from USB flash drive from bios or need some other procedure

3) What about drive partition. Current I have only one partitioned. Can I partitioned the drive without formatting the drive or reinstalling win 8?

4) Also, whether I would be able  to partition the drive when I will try to reinstall win 8 from USB flash where I have made the image?

5) USB flash drive is not reliable source for retention of backup. After making image of win 8 in USB flash drive, It would be ok that I would copy USB flash drive to external hardware drive or in other PC and whenever need again copy from PC to USB flash and then reinstall win 8?

  • Hi mcsan,

You can use Dell Backup and Recovery Manager for creating the factory image on the USB flash drive. A 16GB flash drive shall be sufficient enough, however, if you wish you can use DVDs as well. You can restore easily back to factory image using the USB flash drive by booting through it from F12 Menu.

Yes, you can create more than 1 partition. Here are the steps:

    • Open Control Panel -> Administrator Tools -> Computer Management. A screen like this should pop up.

    • Click on Disk Management. To create a new partition just right click the volume you want to shrink, hit shrink volume.

    • Then you should see a screen like this. Enter the amount of space you would like your new "Drive" to be and hit Shrink.

    • Once that is done you should be back at the Computer Management page. You should also have some Unallocated Space, right click that and hit New Simple Volume.

    • The New Simple Volume Wizard should show up and take you through the installations steps.

    • Give the new drive a letter. Assign any letter that is not associated with any other drive currently.

    • Next you need to choose a files system that is basically the type of foundation for your storage type. It is preferable that you select “NTFS” file system.

    • When the “Volume Label” text box shows up, assign a name to your drive.
    • Click “Finish” to make the partition.

    • You will see a new partition created with the name and letter you assigned to it.

When you will restore the system using the recovery USB flash drive, it will install factory image of the system and you will need to follow this process again to create the partition, as it will not allow you to create a partition during restore process. Also, this will Dell backup and recovery will create a bootable flash drive, so you cannot copy the data to an external hard drive and use the flash drive as it will corrupt it and you will not be able to use the image again.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Dear sir,

    Thanks for the reply.

Generally when OS infected with virus we used to format drive C in which OS is installed. Other drives data will remain intact. So I want a system backup and restore in such a way that when I will try to restore it will affect only C drive and other partitioned drive will remain unaffected. Please let me know, is this possible? and if yes, then what is the procedure.

  • Hi Maulik,

Restoring the system using Dell Backup and Manager will reset the system to factory state like you got it from Dell. However, we cannot comment on whether it will retain the data or other partitions intact.

There are certain third party utilities which may be able to do so, but Dell has not tested them neither endorse them. You may search online and use one which may fulfill your need.

Hope this helps. Please reply if you have any questions.

  • Dear Saharsh,

    Thanks for the reply.

What if I will take backup after creating partition and necessary software installed? Only I need is this system should affect only C drive when I restore.

However, if it does not then you are requested to suggest a good one third party backup solution which can work well with Dell.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Maulik,

The recovery media created using Dell Backup and Recovery manager will restore it to the image that you backup on it. It will bring back the system to the state of which you took the backup. If you want a utility which only formats the C drive, you may look for a few from the list shared on the link en.wikipedia.org/.../List_of_backup_software.

Dell has not tested these utilities and does not endorse them. Please reply if you have any questions.

  • Dear Saharsh,

I have tried for system backup with Dell backup and recovery software. I have chosen the option Recovery Media and then insert a blank DVD. Process is ok till first DVD has written. But when I prompted to insert next blank DVC, the software could not resume. I have inserted the next blank DVD when I received the message for the same. Then I pressed ok button in the message but dell software did not write further. I just became silent. And I have tried for two times and got the same result. I do not know what to do.

Its became hell after buying DELL laptop. I felt just I had been harassed by purchasing Dell. This software has been made by some trainee software engineer. It is also not detecting DVD automatically when I inserted again and also does not have any button option when it got errors to detect, we can give command manually.

    Bitter experience.

  • Use a 16 gig or larger USB Flash Drive.  Do not insert the USB flash drive until after it tells you to do so.

Sandisk Cruiser Fit is a good choice.

I want to back up dell factory image of win 8 on a new USB flash drive. but dell  is not accepting this USB drive or any other USB flash drive which is with 16 GB strorage memory, sufficient for this process. every time it says  ''no usb key detected''

Why is this happening ? pls help !!

  • If you have not resolved this issue...I encountered the same thing "No USB Key detected"....

Do NOT insert USB Flash Drive until AFTER you see this message.....the software will than detect Flash drive and you can proceed to make the Factory image backup
