Laptop microphone doesnt work

I have a Dell laptop 1545....I hooked up magic jack plus to it tonite. I dialed a number through my computer....I could her the person on the other end fine but when I talked she could not hear me. Is there a way to be sure the mic is turned on??  I did a voice test on the computer and it failed.....Can anyone help with this?? thanks

  • Hello Hietak,

    I would recommend you to test the Microphone first. Microphone test:  

    1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Sound Recorder. In Windows XP, you will need to select Multimedia (or Entertainment). 
    2. Click the Record button, and speak into the microphone. 
    3. The green waveform should react to your voice. 
    4. To end the recording, click Stop. 
    5. To hear your recording, click the Play button. 

    Set Recording to Mic/Microphone:  

    1. Double-click the Speaker icon in the System Tray.
    2. Click Options in the menu at the top of the window. 
    3. Click Properties. 
    4. Choose Recording in the Adjust Volume For section. Do not choose Playback in the Adjust Volume for section. Choosing Playback in conjunction with unmuting the Mic may cause loud feedback during recordings. 
    5. Ensure that Mic/Microphone has a check-mark next to it. 
    6. Click OK. 
    7. Test the microphone using Sound Recorder.

    Please try the steps and write back with results.

    Please let me know if you have run the Dell PC Diagnostics on the microphone. If not, please run the test and write back with results.

  • thank you for your input....i did run the test....it tells me that there is no problem...however after I have checked every one of the places that the volume might be muted, etc....i still don't have the capability to record....I can hear the person talking but cannot respond.....

  • Hello Hietak,

    Please let me know if you have tried using the microphone in Skype. Also try connecting an external head phone with microphone (if available) and check if that works. This would prove the functionality of the microphone.
