Dell xps l502x power on problem

This question is not answered

The laptop only powers on and boots to Windows 7 if i press the D button then power button. it goes through the usual coloured screens then boots as i would normally expect if i had pressed the power button on its own. It will only work if the mains adapter is connected, it will not power on by battery power, the battery is okay as when the laptop has successfully booted in to Windows i can turn the mains adapter off and it will then run battery power for about two hours. a very weird problem?

  • Hi wavebreaker,

I would suggest you to drain the residual power from the laptop:

    • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
    • Then remove the adapter
    • Remove the battery
    • Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
    • Reconnect the battery and the adapter

You may update the system BIOS. Please refer to the link: http://dell.to/11ST1Gq.

Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that:
*Battery is 10%> or >10% charged
    *Battery charger should be connected
*No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected.
*All other programs should be closed and documents saved

Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist further.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Thank you for suggestion, I tried everything you suggested, however nothing has changed. I can still only power the laptop using the d button and power button combined.

It seems to me that the issue is with the power button assembly. Please provide me the Service Tag and the name as it appears on the account via private message (click my username and then click Start Conversation) so I may access your records and check for further course of action.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist further.
