No wifi Dell Inspiron 1750, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

This question is not answered

Dell Inspiron 1750, Windows Home Premium 7 x64 -

no wifi access through my Windstream 2wire router. [router and modem combined]

Other devices both Macbook and Dell laptop are still connecting through my router so I'm pretty sure it's in the DELL Inspiron.

I can see networks in the "connect to a network" box but when I try to connect to them, it brings up a box that says unable to connect to network.
Most of the time the wireless status icon shows 5 unlit bars with an orange dot over them.

The only suggestion from trouble shooter is reset the router by turning it off and on. No go there.
I've also reset router to factory defaults with no change.

I can connect with ethernet cable with no problem.

I've tried the "flush.bat" and other suggestions in other forums with no success.

My network adapter is- Intel® Wifi Link 5100 AGN -
I've updated the driver it says it's working.

I've run all of Dell's hardware diagnostics which found no hardware issues.

[I could post ipconfig results if that might help.]

Appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks.

  • djbeede,

What virus program and firewall are you using?

Can you run Finding System Information REMOVE YOUR PRODUCT ID and REGISTERED OWNER and post the information back here.

Can you also run Network Interface and post that information back here.

  • djbeede,

Download the Intel Intel(R) WiFi Link 5300, Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100, v.tic TRWFW0986D , A01 drivers and save them to your desktop.

    Make a system restore point.

Start, control panel, device manager, network adapters, right click on Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN, left click uninstall. Tell it to remove the drivers and software.

    Restart your computer.

When you log back in, the new hardware wizard will try to install the adapter but fail. Install the drivers saved to your desktop.

Places to look to see if your Connection is enabled

    Welcome to Dell Community!

  • I did all of the above and the new driver software is installed. [old version was 12.4.1.4 and now is 13.0.0.107]

I have a dedicated key on my computer that turns the wifi on and off and it is definitely on.

    Still no go.

    Same symptoms.

Thanks for your efforts Rick... what's the next step?

  • djbeede,

Can you run an ipconfig /all log and post it back here.

  • djbeede,

Try downloading and installing Dell QuickSet, v.9.6.21, A07 then look to see if your Connection is enabled

I see your ip address is on a higher range. Does your router have enough ip addresses available?

You are not using Mac Address filtering, are you?

Unplug the ethernet cable, then restart your computer and try to connect.

    Try reading,,,

How to repair a connection and reset the winsock catalog.

What is a Dell Service Tag and how do I locate it?

  • Hey Rick,

Did all that and the symptoms are the same.

I don't know about IP addresses and the router. I know my IP address has been in that range for years with no problems.... same router/modem.

My connection is enabled. When it is disabled [via my dedicated key] no wifi access point is visible. When it is ennabled, I see my home wifi with five strong green bars. I just can't connect up with it.

I went and read those pages about connections and all of the winsock reset info was for XP or below,

    I didn't see anything for 7?

    All symptoms still the same.

  • David,

Run Network Interface and post the results back here.

  • Here it is Rick.

I did this while connected through Ethernet, if that makes any difference?

  • David,

It's not showing the routers wireless network, channel and type of security.

How to login to your wireless router I use these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

I never had aIntel 5100 and here are My Intel WiFi 5100 AGN Connectivity Settings I no longer have the system, so I cannot check the system for details.

If memory serves me correctly, hit the Windows key and the x keys at the same time. See if you have a WiFi Catcher.

  • Hey Rick,

I have, via another forum, signed into my router config. As admin reset it to factory defaults.

I've deleted my account and recreated it.

Here's why I think we're barking up the wrong tree with tweaking the router. I have two older dell laptops [Inspiron X300s] my wife's Macbook, an iPad and two iPhones - are all accessing the internet smoothly without an issue thru this 2Wire router, set as it is.  The ONLY device I have with an issue is this Dell Inspiron 1750... and that is a recent development. It's been smoothly accessing the internet thru the router set, as it is, for 4 years now.

I just discovered this thread on the intel communities:

    communities.intel.com/.../19218

Apparently a lot of folks are having trouble with their Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN adapter.

I haven't had the chance to read through it yet, but will go do that now.

Just wanted you to know what was up and why I'm not tweaking my router settings at this point.

    Thanks,

    David

  • In the above mentioned Intel forum I found out a lot of folks are having this problem with the Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN adapter that is used in many dif machines. I found the replacement cards are available at various places online for about $20. I have opened my laptop before to repair the mouse pad and it was no fun, so I opted for a MediaLink Wireless N USB adapter for $20 and skipped the headache of opening my machine.  It seems to work fine so far.

I would prefer to actually fix the problem, but have sunk too much time into this already. I do find it frustrating that the Dell diagnostics still finds no hardware problem. Go figure.  Thanks for all your efforts Rick.
