Dell M1330 Right/Left Click on Touchpad not working

This question is not answered

Hello everyone! I was wondering if anyone is having the same issue that I am. Last week, my laptop was working fine at school, then I brought it home. It was working good as well. Just before I was about to go to bed, I tired shutting down my laptop but the right and left click buttons wouldn't work. At first I thought my laptop froze, so I manually shut it down, then I restarted it and the click buttons still didn't work. Come to find out after doing some research, people suggested I reinstall my touchpad driver so I did. Now my computer is having problems restarting and shutting down, and on top of that the right and left click buttons still don't work.

Does anyone know how I can fix this myself. My software warranty just went out and Dell wants to charge me $145 to fix it.

Any help would be great! Thanks!

  • Hi Dell4573,

Uninstall the touchpad drivers and then reinstall. Follow below steps to uninstall and reinstall the touchpad driver:

I have provided an updated touchpad drivers link below.

Follow below steps to Uninstall and reinstall the drivers:

    1. Click “Start”, type “Device Manager” and press enter.
    2. In the “Device Manager” window, open the "Mice and Other Pointing Devices" selection.
    3. Under “"Mice and Other Pointing Devices", right click the Synaptic touchpad, and click “Uninstall”.
    4. Check the box “Delete driver software for this device”, click ok and follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall.
    5. Restart the computer.

Now, install the drivers from the following link:

If the issue persists, check the behavior in safe mode with networking.

Restart the computer and tap F8 on Dell logo and select Safe mode with networking. Check if the touch pad buttons work. Also check if the restart issues come up in safe mode with networking.

    Awaiting your response!

    Thanks & Regards

  • Hello, thanks for responding to this.

So I tried uninstalling like you said. It still didn't work. When I tried downloading the new driver, my computer wouldn't restart as I stated, so I just manually shut it down. The driver wasn't there, but my touchpad was still working, just not the right/left click buttons.

I am running Windows 8. I tried tapping the F8 key and my computer freaked out, and after about 30 minutes of thinking, my laptop gave me the option to restore, it went back to the touchpad and buttons not working. I was hoping it let me enter a date, but that was not an option.

If there's anything else I should try, let me know. Thanks again!

  • Hi Dell4573,

Windows 8 has a different method to boot into safe mode:

Boot into safe mode and check if the touchpad buttons work.

Follow below mentioned steps to boot into Safe mode (Windows 8):

    1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.

(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)

    1. Under PC settings, tap or click General.
    2. Under Advanced startup, tap or click Restart now.
    3. On the Choose an option screen, tap or click Troubleshoot.
    4. Tap or click Startup Settings.
    5. Tap or click Restart.
    6. On the Startup Settings screen, choose the startup setting you want.
    7. Sign in to your PC with a user account that has administrator rights.

I recommend running PC check on the touchpad to check if its hardware or a software issue.

Click on the following link to run PC check on touchpad:

Select Custom scan and then click on “Mouse”.

  • Okay, is this PC Check, checking the MOUSE? Because the mouse works fine. It's the touchpad left/right click buttons that are not working.

I did the "Safe Mode", and that did nothing. When I took it off "Safe Mode", my touchpad did not work. I had to go back to a previous version drive to get the "Touchpad" working again, but still no Left/Right Click.

  • Is there an audible click when you press the touchpad buttons?

  • No, nothing happens, as if they are not there. I don't know why they just stopped working.

  • You'll need to replace the palmrest assembly

  • Thanks! I was hoping not the have to replace it, but I guess I'll try that and see what happens.
