Replacement Hard Drive for Dell XPS 1530

This question is answered

I am looking to replace my hard drive in my Dell XPS 1530.  I've purchased another laptop (15Z) and will be using this as a spare.  The drive is basically toast but I believe the memory and motherboard are still good.

I see that the specs on the currently insrtalled Seagate Momentus 7200.2 are 9.5mm on height, but the hard drives I'm finding on Newegg have varying lengths and widths.  Specs on the Seagate site for my current drive state:

length: 100.5 +/- 0.25 mm (3.957 +/- +/- 0.00984 inches)

Width: 69.85 mm +/- 0.25 mm (2.75 +/- 0.00984 inches)

So, I am assuming that I need to stay within the + and - tolerences and I will be okay??  For instance, I see a Western Digital Scorpio at 69.75 on width and 100.3 on length so that should be within the tolerance.  Just want to make sure it will fit in the laptop and screw into the housing okay.  I've done a lot of desktop hardware stuff, but not so much laptops, so this is new to me.  Any suggestions as to well priced hard drives would be appreciated.  I see the HGST branded drives seem to be value priced, but then maybe you get what you pay for :).  I don't need any more than 320gb, but want to stay at 7200 RPM.

Thanks!

  • Any standard 2.5" notebook drive that's 9.5 or 7 mm will work.

There are only three manufacturers of notebook drives left - WD (which owns HGST/Hitachi), Seagate (ditto Samsung) and Toshiba.
