Laptop won't run off the battery

Hello all, I have a Dell xps M1530 laptop. A few months ago my battery started to go. I just purchased a new one from Dell and it worked good for a few days then for some some reason the laptop won't run when it is not plugged into the AC adapter. I have tried unplugging the AC and taking the battery out and holding down the start button for 30 seconds and that didn't do anything. On the tool bar the battery shows its 100% fully charged and the lights on the battery itself also says it's fully charged. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

    1. Does the laptop work with both the Battery and AC Adapter connected?
    2. Does the laptop work only with the AC Adapter connected?

  • Yes it is very annoying.

    1- Yes the laptop does work with both connected. I can take the battery out and the laptop still runs and does recognize the battery is out on the tool bar

    2-Yes the laptop only works with the AC adapter connected. If you disconnect the power cord it immediately goes off with no sign of life at all.

  • i have the same issue with my M1530. I bought a new 9-cell battery with a 65w power adapter.  I just bought a 90w power adaptor in hopes this will fix my non-charging issue, but does not explain why the laptop won't work with just the battery.  Any help?

    Thank you for your reply and for providing an update. I suggest you to check if the AC Adapter is detected in BIOS. If yes, then update the BIOS to the latest version. You can download the latest BIOS from the following link by punching in the Service Tag:

  • At start up, system says adapter may be too low on power (something to that effect).  I have a 90w adapter coming to replace the 65 watt.  Battery tested good. Motherboard was just back from repair and tested good. Updated from BIOS A09 to A12, but the laptop still will not run off of the battery.

  • After plugging in the new adapter, I get the same message at start-up that it does not recognize the power adaptor.  It will charge the battery for a few minutes and then stop. I also installed bios A09 and A12, but it made no difference.  I also reset the power adapter.  Any help?

  • I also updated the bios and nothing has changed. I wonder why the AC adapter would have anything to do with the battery, especially when it says the battery is 100% charged .

  • Both power adapters and the battery are aftermarket.

  • The company i bought the adapter from is asking for the following information about the original Dell adapter.  Can you provide me withe following information? This is not available on Dell's site.

    Printed on the original adapter:

    1. The output voltage(V):

    2. The output Current(A):

    3. The model of your laptop: M1530

    4 .The size of the DC jack(tip):

    Thank you for your reply.  The details of the output voltage and current are as provided below:

    Output Voltage: 19.5 +/–1 VDC
    Output Current: 5.62 A (maximum at 4-second pulse
                              4.62 A (65 W) (continuous)

    The size of the DC jack can be verified from the old adaptor. Please let me know if you need further information.

  • I purchased a new Dell adapter in hopes that this is my problem.  Order number <ADMIN NOTE: Order number removed per privacy policy>
