  • Hi Sgt fruitloop,

It might be an issue with the software or the hardware of the computer. Let’s try the following steps and see if it works.

Drain the residual power from the laptop:

    • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
    • Then remove the adapter
    • Remove the battery
    • Press and hold the power button for 10 seconds
    • Reconnect the battery and the adapter
    • Try to restart the computer and check

I would suggest you to run the diagnostics to check the hardware functionality.

    To run ‘Dell Diagnostics’

    • Power off the computer
    • Restart the computer, press F12 on the Dell logo
    • Select ‘Diagnostics’ from the boot menu\
    • Please refer to the link if any error code shows up http://dell.to/OUGnqT

    Alternatively, check in Safe mode:

    • Power off the computer
    • Restart the computer, tap F8 on Dell logo 2-3 times
    • This will take you to ‘Windows Advanced Boot Options’
    • Choose ‘Safe Mode’ in the Advanced Boot menu (use ‘up’ or ‘down’ arrow keys to highlight the option, press ‘enter’ to select)
    • When Windows finishes loading in Safe mode, check if the computer is working fine

If the system boot to Safe Mode, I would recommend you to perform System restore. Please follow the steps mentioned in this article http://dell.to/VRG2ad

Please reply if you have any questions.

  • Hi Sgt fruitloop,

If the diagnostics has passed and the system is unable to boot into Safe Mode, I would recommend you to perform PC restore, which means taking the computer back to factory defaults to eradicate any software issues.

Note: This step leads to data loss from the computer including pictures, music files, videos, documents and applications.

    To perform PC restore:

    • Restart PC, press <F8> 3-4 times when the Dell logo appears.
    • Advanced Boot Options menu appears, ‘Repair your Computer' is highlighted, press Enter. (Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice)
    • Windows is loading files screen appears. Wait for it to load.
    • System Recovery Options prompt appears. Specify the language and keyboard input that you want, and then click ‘Next’.
    • Log in as a user who has administrative credentials; select the username from the drop-down list, type the password and click OK.
    • Choose a Recovery Tool Window appears, select Dell Data Safe Restore and Emergency Backup.
    • The Welcome screen will show 2 options; Restore computer and preserve my new or changed files and Select other System Backup and more options. Select the second option (Select other System Backup and more options) and click Next.
    • The next window shows these options; Backup Files and folders and Restore my computer. Select ‘Restore my computer’.
    • Select the Factory Image and click ‘Next’.
    • The next window shows 2 options; 'Preserve new or changed files before restoring to selected System Backup' and 'Restore without preserving new or changed files'. Select the second option (Restore without preserving new or changed files) and click Next.
    • A prompt appears stating that your computer is about to be restored all data currently on your computer will be deleted and replaced with your selected Full System Backup. If an Emergency File & Folder Backup was created, it will still be saved at the location you selected. Click 'Yes, continue' and click Next.
    • PC restore will initiate. Once done, click Restart.
    • Follow the onscreen instructions to create a user account

  • Good  morning I was reading this post and a few other ones and I have a dell inspiron 1545 as well that is a coworkers of mines.  I ran a full diagnostics yesterday and it took about an  hour without any errors.  But still when I try to boot up it will not go past the blinking cursor.  I have tried to get into advance recovery or safe mode but every time I have the option to press f2 or f12 and I press f8 it does nothing but start making a sound.  f2 and f12 work to get into bios and the other option but I can't seem to access safe mode. Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.

  • Hi M4sterch3f,

Thank you for reaching out. I will be glad to assist you. Since the diagnostics has passed, it seems to be an issue with the software of the computer. Please ensure that no external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives, card reader etc) are connected to the computer -> disconnect if any -> power on the computer and check.

Ensure that the Hard Drive is listed in BIOS:

    • Power off the computer
    • Restart the computer, tap 'F2' key 4-5 times
    • This will take you to the BIOS screen
    • Look for 'Primary Hard Drive'
    • Ensure that it is listed and not showing as Unknown/Not Detected (refer image)
    • Please share the status

Please reply if you have any questions.

  • Hi ram_mar,

You may try the following steps:

Drain the residual power from the laptop:

    • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
    • Then remove the adapter and the battery
    • Press and hold the power button for 10-20 seconds
    • Reconnect the battery and the adapter

I would suggest you to run the Dell Diagnostics to check the hardware functionality. Power off the computer -> restart the computer, press 'F12' key on the Dell logo -> Select ‘Diagnostics’ from the boot menu.

You may also try to boot into Safe Mode and check. Power off the computer -> Restart the computer, tap F8 on Dell logo 2-3 times -> This will take you to ‘Windows Advanced Boot Options’ -> Choose ‘Safe Mode’ in the Advanced Boot menu (use ‘up’ or ‘down’ arrow keys to highlight the option, press ‘enter’ to select) -> When Windows finishes loading in Safe mode, check if the computer is working fine.

Please share the findings; will take it further.

  • Hi, Appu.
I ald did the safe mode but still the same greyish screen and automatic shutdown and restarting.
And I ald did the diagnostics for harware and OS but it says that it has no problem.

I also did the System Restore but still not working. What else can you suggest to do?

    thanks.

  • Hi ram,

This doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. This looks to be an operating system corruption.

Where have you backed up the data using Dell Emergency backup?

The backup is always in encrypted and cannot be accessed or opened without the DataSafe application. You may have to re-install the operating system. Please refer to the following link http://dell.to/1aJ40Nr

Note: This step leads to complete data loss including pictures, music files, videos, documents and applications.

  • Hi,

I need help for my Dell Inspiron 1545. When I start up, I see black screen and when I run the dell diagnostics (power button + fn), the result is 7beeps. What is the meaning of the 7 beeps? Probably hardware problems, but in CPU?

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

  • Hi VFSoul,

7 beeps for this computer model implies that the processor might be faulty.

You may try to drain the residual power from the laptop:

    • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
    • Then remove the adapter and the battery
    • Press and hold the power button for 10-20 seconds
    • Reconnect the battery and the adapter
    • Try to restart the computer and check

If the steps doesn't help, then the motherboard may have to be replaced. Let me know if your system is in warranty.

    Thanks & Regards,

  • Hi Appu,

Thanks for the quick response. I try to drain the residual power from the laptop, but didn't work. I think it is no longer under warranty, but the Service Tag is *******.

If I want to replace the motherboard, where can I buy it?

    Thank you for your support.

  • Hi VFSoul,

Please remove the service tag from public view for security reasons.

The warranty has expired. You can click on the link http://dell.to/11iojrK , choose -> Contact Us on the top left hand side. Choose the country you currently reside in to get the contact information.

Let me know if you need any further assistance.

Yes I ald did the backup and its all ok.thanks. so How I reformat my lappy?

  • Hi

I have checked all the solutions that you have posted here with no luck so far. I am having the same problem.

    1) I did all the diagnostics and they found nothing wrong.

    2) I tried to do a system restore but after the system restore runs, I get an unspecified error code. I googled the code and it tells me that most likely my antivirus program is preventing the computer from making changes and restoring.

    3) i checked in the BIOS and my hard drive is listed as you recommended n this post.

Is there a way to disable the antivirus or work around it to complete the system restore? I believe that would work rather than doing a factory reset.

    thank You

    Jason
