We have a dell inspiron 910, when the battery is in we get an error "Warning: The Battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery." when booting up . If we remove the battery and run the device off the ac adaptor power it works fine.
Apparently the battery warning is common and the recommended fix is to flash the BIOS.
I visited the dell drivers and updates site and entered the service tag. There were 2 BIOS downloads for our model. The latest was from 5/6/2011. So I ran it (in WindowsXP) and I get yet another error:
"BIOS update failed! Failed to flash BIOS image
BIOS is not flashableError code: -144See help for trouble shooting"
I've rebooted the machine 5 times and tried running the BIOS update but each time same error.
Any ideas on what to do? I have saved the BIOS file to the desktop.
Please check if you can flash BIOS to the latest version after performing the steps given below: Shut the system down, remove the battery and disconnect the ac adapter, press and hold the power button for 20 to 30 seconds. Now connect only the ac adapter and wait for 30 seconds and turn on the system and at the dell logo, tap the F2 key on the keyboard every two seconds. In the BIOS screen press F9 to load defaults and F10 to save. Press ‘ESC’ to exit from the BIOS screen.
Please reply to this post for further assistance.

Unfortunately no, I followed the steps you said (ps to get to BIOS menu was 2 and not F2), it then booted into windows XP, I have the file (QHA07_Win) saved on the desktop, so ran it > clicked start (the dialog box says inspiron 910),the destination directory says "C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\WINPHLASH) > WinPhlash then starts, I get a tick on all stages of the process until it gets to "Flash new BIOS" and then it gives the same error as before.
My apologies for asking you to press ‘F2’ key to go to the BIOS screen. As you said you will have to press number ‘2’ to go to BIOS screen. I would like know if you set BIOS to default settings as I suggested in the previous post. In case you have set BIOS defaults and still not able to flash BIOS, as the message reads you will be unable to flash BIOS. The only solution for this will be mother board replacement.
