2000-0146 error

This question is not answered

I have a Dell Inspiron 15 M5030 320gb laptop. Replaced cpu 2 months after purchase. A year later I am encountering slow startups. Yesterday it went down. Wont boot, getting 0xc00000e9 message. Did the diagnostics and turns out it might be the hdd, error 2000-0146. BIOS recognizes hdd, and I have only the recovery disk. I have read it might be just sectors that are bad on the hdd and I can still boot from a cd/dvd. What do I need to boot (programs, files etc)? And could it be a virus that affected my registry? Sorry if I am not more specific. I am not knowledgeable enough with computers. Thanks for any help.

  • Call Dell - report the error.  They'll send a replacement for your faulty hard drive under warranty.

  • Yes its a bad hard drive, you will need to replace it and clean install the Operating System,

  • Can I boot from another source to recover files? My wedding pictures were on the laptop.

  • I wrote a wiki for this to recover the files using a bootable USB Stick with Linux, results are limited depending on the condition of the hard drive but you should try to do it immediately. http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/disk-drives/w/disk_drives/4093.recovering-files-from-a-failed-hard-drive-with-a-windows-vista7-installation-using-fedora.aspx

  • Thanks for the prompt answers. I will try the wiki and post results. As of now I am out of luck since the warranty expired a few months ago.

  • Found a reinstall disk. Lucky me. Is there a wiki for reinstall?

  • Yes I wrote wikies on reinstalling. However you will need to replace the hard drive first. For instructions on replacing the hard drive please see the Service Manual here. Unfortunately its not an easy to get to the hard drive in this model so take a note where your screws come from. You can number each of them according to the diagram in the manual and attach scotch magic tape to them and scribble a number on the tape so you don't loose track.

For buying a hard drive, crucial.com is a good place for solid state drives and also RAM (if you want) which will offer superior performance, although you can of course shop around. See my wiki here for some details/hints.

Once the new hard drive is installed then you can reinstall Windows, for this see my wiki A Clean Install of Windows.
