"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system

This question is not answered

Dell Inspiron 6000 (Windows XP)

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \windows\system32\config\system"
"you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM. Select 'R' at the first screen to start repair."

I don't have an orignal Setup CD-Rom. I have tried the system recovery disk I made when I got the system. The drive spins up but no change in my errror message.

I would like to resolve this issue.

I am a long time Dell user presently have
3 Dell PC's on my home network.
Dell Inspiron-531 (Windows Vista)
Dell Inspiron-620 (Windows 7)
Dell Inspiron N5110 (Windows 7)

Any help would be appreciated.

  • You need a Dell XP Home Reinstallation CD. I assume Home Edition but it will say on your COA sticker at the base of the system.

As you are from the US you should be able to get one from Dell by filling out this form here. They might charge for this service as this system is no longer warranty and XP is being phased out. The alternative solution is to purchase one from eBay. Once you have the CD attempt a repair install. Then follow the instructions here.
