USB Ports not working

This question is answered

I've had my Inspiron 15R N5110 since January, and since probably about march or april, two of my USB ports stopped working. I'm really not sure why. I was using a madcats mouse at the time, and the mouse suddenly wouldn't work, then it would occasionally work, and now I can't use anything in two of my three ports. I've tried updating my Bios and Drivers, and I've run diagnostics checks, but the updates have never fixed the problem, and the diagnostics says that there is no problem. I plugged in my phone to both ports this morning, and the phone recognized that there was a charge, but the laptop did not recognize that there was anything plugged in. If there's any additional information needed, let me know, and tell me how to find this information, as I'm semi-computer-illiterate. I don't know where a lot of things are.

  • Hi  MisaMiko,

It should be 64 bit,it will show up under System Properties (click start menu, right click Computer, click properties).

Try updating the Chipset driver from this link : www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats

Reboot system and install this driver for the USB 3.0 port :

    www.dell.com/.../DriverFileFormats

If it still does not work,go to Control Panel,System,Hardware,Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right click on each of the USB root hubs listed and click uninstall (uninstall all root hubs) and restart the system.Check if the USB port works.

    Thank You

  • Hi MisaMiko,

    Welcome to the Community,

There are two USB 3.0 ports (one on the right and other at the rear) on the system. Are these the two USB ports which are not working?

Which Windows Operating system is installed on the system? Is it 32 bit or 64 bit?

    Thank You

  • Those are the two that are not working. I have one on the left that does work though. I think my OS is 64 bit, but I'm really not sure how to check.

  • Hi Roshan

My Laptop XPS L502 Esata\USB port doesnt work popularly. When i used an Esata cable plus with an external HHD it detected the Harddisk external but it didnt detect any usb 2.0 devices any more ( before it worked fine with both). Could you please help me how to fix this problem? My Dell XPS L502's updated with the lastest drivers and Bios. Can you suggest me which Bios is recently used for my Laptop?

    Thanks

  • Hi  dukies,

Did you try updating the Chipset driver? Try the link in my previous post to update Chipset driver and also try this step:

Go to Control Panel,System,Hardware,Device Manager, expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers, right click on each of the USB root hubs listed and click uninstall (uninstall all root hubs) and restart the system.Check if the USB 2.0 port works.

Does any other (apart from the external HDD) USB device work on this USB 2.0 port?

The latest BIOS version for your system is Version A11 which you can download from the link below :

  • If the operating system was installed/reinstalled...

When you reinstalled the operating system, did you install the Desktop/Notebook system software and the chipset drivers first? If not, the rest of the drivers will fail to install. How to Download and Install Drivers in the Correct Order

Start with the Desktop/Notebook system software and the chipset drivers and follow the list.

    Also try...

    Start, control panel, device manager

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Starting at the bottom, USB Root Hubs, and working your way to the top, USB Universal Controllers, un-install everything in that section.

Restart your computer. Windows will find everything again and correct the problem one. Please be patient. The new hardware wizard may work 3-5 minutes before it's done.

  • Dear Roshan and RockSt☆r-Rick K

Thank for answer my question. I have updated my Dell XPS  L502 Bios version to A11 and followed the instruction to uninstall everything in Universal Serial Buss Controllers from the bottom USB root Hub to the top Generic USB Hub but my problem is still persisted this mean my Esata\USB(combo) port works if i plug with an esata cable but with an USB 2.0 cable it wont work. It look like the Esata\USB(combo) couldnt give the power to the USB 2.0 portable disk. Before it just worked fine with both Esata portable disk and USB 2.0 portable disk. Is my Esata\USB(combo) controller fault ? Please help me.

    Thanks

    Dukies.

  • Dukies,

Download and install, in this order...

    Intel Huron River (HM67)

    Renesas USB3.0 Host Controller

Then restart the computer and try it.

    What happens?

  • Does this work if you only have USB 2.0? I just bought a Seagate Go Flex and would like to use the USB 3.0. How is it possible?

    Works as always..

  • klauzser,

Just try installing the chipset drivers, which should have the 2.0 usb port drivers. The renesas is the 3.0 drivers.
