Dell XPS 15 L502X Webcam Not working.

This question has suggested answer(s)

Okay, so all was working fine until today, my webcam has stopped working, When i boot Dell Webcam Central i get a message at the bottom stating "No supported webcam connected".

Video chats on MSN and facebook do not work, it's like the webcam no longer exists.

I think it was caused by some other webcam software, which i've since uninstalled.

I've tried reinstalling the "Quanta H.264 Integrate Webcam Rev: A00" driver from the resource disk - it did not work.

I've tried to use system restore to restore to a time i KNOW the webcam was working, it did not work.

...And then, i encounted all the problems with the dell website...

I was trying to find the executable to reinstall Webcam Central to see if that had any effect, Went to the "Download Factory Installed Software (My Dell Downloads)" section of the website, and i get this message:

Register Your System

Please proceed to register your system by clicking "Register New System". Registration will allow us to display the software entitled for download. You will be automatically registered after your click "allow" on the service tag scanning utility.

I tick the box and click Register System - Nothing happens. It just stays on the same page. I thought this was because i was in Firefox so i tried IE... same problem. Except this time IE has an error on page.

So... i tried emailing dell support... yet ANOTHER error:

Error determining system information. Please try again later.

I try to use the live chat... guess what...!

Do you really hate me so much that you refuse to offer me any support, Dell?? Fix your website!

Anyway, end of that rant! How do i fix my webcam problem?

  • Hi, just to let you know, i fixed the main problem of my webcam, after all else failed, i decided to unplug everything from my laptop (i had a keyboard, mouse, external monitors, speakers etc plugged in, it was basically a desktop) to see if it made any difference.

I took the battery out for 20 seconds, put it back in and booted back up and voilla! for some strange reason.. windows decided it would automatically install the device software itself.. it searched for it.. and it found it.

However, the site problems still persist, and infact, i've discovered more! :/ but i'll leave those for dell to look at.

  • Happened with me yesterday and I had to call the Dell tech Support. Some guy in Manilla took my notebook back 2 restore points and then finally asked me to backup my important data and lucky enough for me my laptop was just 2 weeks old so i didnt have much on it anyway, and then we did a complete factory image restore to get back the camera to work....

If only I had read your post, I would have avoided that pain of a 1hr phone call and restoring back to factory image...!

Anyhows, will keep this in mind... thanks for sharing.... removing the battering and putting it back in.... sounds like something I would do to my smartphone... but notebooks as well now...!

It seems switching to Vista Compatibility mode is also producing some great results.

  • I did do an update of the Dell Webcam Central Software... I didnt try the Vista Compatibility mode though.. Will keep that in mind as well for future..! Thanks for the tips

  • Try uninstalling integrated webcam drivers from device manager and then uninstall dell webcam central.

Reboot your pc and then install webcam drivers from the drivers and utilities disc and then install dell webcam central application.

After it, again reboot your pc. The integrated webcam should be working fine now, if not then there is a hardware failure.

    get it replaced.

  • Thats what I thought I would do but the Intgerated Webcam was not showing in the device manager at all... which made me believe that it was a hardware failure but after the original factory settings image restore... it was there again in the device manager and has been working fine since then..!

  • Hi! I had the same problem with my external webcam. Once it just stopped to work.

I tried several things, only that solution worked what I read here to remove everything.

I removed everything for few minutes. I switched on again and it was working.

    Thank you for advice!

  • internal not external sorry

  • I had the same problem.  Webcam just decided to stop working out of no where today.  I tried uninstalling drivers, reinstalling them, rebooting, restore points, everything... nothing fixed it.  Finally I came across this and tried turning off the system and taking the battery out for about a minute.  Put everything back together and webcam started working as soon as my computer booted up to log me in with FastAccess.  Thanks, I would have never thought to do that on me own.  I was on the edge of a rebuild.

  • Me too. Same problem Did everything you did.....no luck. Took out battery....back in....rebooted...webcam returned.

    Thanyou so much.

  • just so you know... this doesnt resolve the problem for good. It will happen again....

  • The camera was OK until I allowed FastAccess to update. After the update the camera was working, but stopped shortly thereafter. Perhaps that update was the cause.

  • dougstew,

  • When it first happened with me, I called dell support and the support person tried 2 restore points back and that didnt resolve the issue, so we ended up doing a system restore to Factory Image and then the webcam was back. So just restoring to an earlier restore point doesnt help

  • Restoring to a time before the webcam went dead didn't work for me, either. The problem obvious lies much deeper than it seems, which is why I found it particuarly strange that the only thing that worked for me was taking the battery out and putting it back in, and it's seemed to work for a few other people, too!
