Best gaming video card I could put in Dell 660 i5-3330 Model: i660-5629BK without PS upgrade?

This question is answered

I got this PC for my son and I would like to know what would be the best video card I could install in this PC and not have to upgrade the Power Supply?

I think, but am not completely sure, that the OEM PS is only 220W.

This is what we have:

Sorry I'm not a gamer and don't know the current tech on video cards.

  • Hi g725s,

Inspiron 660 (Mini tower) is shipped with a 300 W power supply and Inspiron 660s (Slim Tower) is shipped with 220 W power supply.

The link provided by you shows the image of Inspiron 660 which is shipped by Dell with a 300 W power supply; however the specifications in the link for the system shows 220 W power supply.

Dell has tested NVidia GeForce GT 620 and AMD Radeon HD 7570 with Inspiron 660s system that is shipped with a 220 W power supply.

In addition to the above cards, NVIDIA GeForce 640GT card has also been tested with the Inspiron 660 system that is shipped with a 330 W power supply.

Hope this helps. Please feel free to reply for any further assistance.

    Thanks & Regards

  • As mentioned, the HD 7750 is the best gaming card for the 300 watt power supply.  HERE is a list to look at.  It uses less power than the GT 640 mentioned and will work just fine.  The ones I linked all have the faster GDDR5 memory vs the slower DDR3 type.  Note that if you choose the low profile Sapphire card which was linked above, you will have to change brackets to the full size.  The 660 mini tower takes a full size bracket.

  • I wanted to add that there is a really good deal right now on this MSI card HERE.  It has DDR3 memory, but the price may be worth it.  Only $49 after the MIR. Also note that on the DDR3 cards, the memory clock speeds are running at just 800mhz vs 1125mhz on the DDR5 cards.  However, you are getting 2GB of video ram on this MSI card, but it does not make it faster than the 1GB DDR5 cards with the higher clock speeds.

  • Thanks to all of you for your input on this.  Now I know what to get if I don't want to upgrade the Power Supply.

However, I did want to upgrade the power supply...... Wink

  • Thanks to all of you guys for your input.  I had another post before this but not sure what happened to it.

    Dell-Kuldeep M,

I guess I have the 300W PS as I do not have the slim tower.

What if I were to swap out the PS, how big and powerful of a video card has worked in the Dell 660....

  • If you upgraded the power supply to say around a 650 watt unit, then you could get just about anything you want if you want to put this kind of money into it.  Of course it has to physically fit and due to the hard drive cage location in the 660, you might be limited to a 10" long card.  Still a lot of good cards that would work though.

  • Hi g725s,

Glad to know that you found the information helpful.

I see that Kelbear1 has already provided the information related to the power supply and video card upgrade.

I would like to thank Kelbear1 for sharing the information.

Dell has not tested power supply of more than 300W and the video cards mentioned in the earlier post are the only cards tested by Dell.

Please feel free to reply for any further assistance.
