Dell XPS 8700

This question is not answered

Hi all don't know if i need to log a call but just brought a xps 8700 from the UK site and i can't get the hdmi out to work i just get a black screen on both my tv and the monitor that i brought with it (says no signal) .  I did check the with the order support chat when i brought it and the system details page on the web site and both said it has got a hdmi out i have tried different cables and still no joy. I take it there is only one hdmi out on the rear as i can't see any more

Any help would be nice as i don't know if i need to change any settings on the pc it self I just thought you would just plug it in to the hdmi out on the pc and the hdmi in on the TV or monitor

  • Hi Baz John,

XPS 8700 is shipped with integrated as well as discrete graphic solutions. Please share if your computer has been shipped with a discrete video card. If you are not sure about the same you may check the rear of XPS 8700 tower and refer to image below :

Please share the system setup. Will take it further from there.

    Thanks & Regards,

  • It has a Integrated which has a hdmi socket and a Discrete which does not have a hdmi

  • i have my vga plugged into the discrete via a dvi to vga adapter

  • Hi Baz John,

When a discrete video card is installed in system, the integrated video card is disabled automatically. However, if your system have Intel Multi Display option in BIOS, the integrated HDMI port might function. You may follow the steps below to check the option in BIOS :

    • Power on the system
    • Press F2 when you see Dell logo onscreen
    • Highlight Advanced -> Onboard Device Configuration and press Enter
    • Check if you have Intel Multi Display option and Enable it if it is disabled

If the Intel Multi Display option is not present in BIOS, the integrated HDMI port will not function when a discrete video is present.

    Hope this helps.

  • Will have a look at the bios and if not I will call dell as it was sold with hdmi and to me it has not then

  • it is already  enabled so i think i need to call up to dell

  • sorted it has a mini hdmi on the Discrete one , however it just calls it a hdmi port on the dell web site and not a mini hdmi port

  • Hi Baz John,

The information provided on Dell site refers to the integrated HDMI port. However, XPS 8700 is shipped with various discrete graphics options as well. Each video card shipped with system have different ports to connect the monitors.

Ideally, if Intel Multi Display is enabled, the monitor connected to integarted HDMI port should work along with video card.

If it is not working, the issue might be on account of graphics drivers. I would suggest you to update the Intel graphics driver from Here and see if it helps.

Please reply with the findings. Will take it further.

  • I have a similar question. I also have an 8700 connected to a dell S2740. It has both graphics cards (integrated and discrete) I enabled the setting in BIOS as recommended in this post, once I did the monitor was getting a signal from the HDMI cable... HOWEVER. once this happened my machine once I attmpted to power down would simply lock up. If I hard rebooted, the machine would then freeze on boot up. This continued to happen until I changed the BIOS setting back. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated since I bought the machine under the guise that it would work via HDMI. It is the machine in my studio and all the additional hardware and software I have taken the time to install level out and test along with wiring up the entire mic booth I would hate to have to undo all of that and send the machine back. Any help is appreciated.

  • I purchased an XPS 8700 Solid State Drive with Monitor, Dell S2740L. Your attached diagram looks exactly like the computer I received. (1) There is no setup instructions connecting the monitor to the Dell. It came with a VGA Cable. Should this be connected to the Integrated or Discrete video card? The computer came with a DVI converter to connect to the VGA cable. (2) There is a USB Upstream Cable that came with the monitor. What USB port on the XPS 8700 should the USB Upstream Cable be connected to? (3) Is the Upstream Cable USB 2.0 or 3.0? and what is it for? (4) There is no manual with the diagram you have attached. Please provide the link to the manual you are referencing. (5) On the Discrete video card (first card in you picture), what is the 'USB' like port to the right of it for? (6) To take advantage of the Dell S2740L, I need a DVI Cable?
