Dimension 4500S Primary hard disk drive 0 not found

This question is not answered

I'm trying to get an old 4500S working, and it keeps giving me this error. I've tried reseating the drive, and I also swapped the data cable with the CD-drive's IDE 2 cable. I'd swap it for an old sata drive I have laying around, but there's no SATA connector on the motherboard that I can see. Help?

  • Hello GeorgeNotCloony,

In order to assist you further, please help me understand if you have checked in BIOS Setup if the hard drive is detected. To enter BIOS Setup, restart the computer and start tapping <F2> key. I would also request you to try resetting the BIOS to factory defaults. Use Alt+F key to reset BIOS to factory defaults. Restart the computer and check if that works.

    Please write back with results.

    Thanks & Regards

  • I checked in BIOS, and all 4 hard drive slots were "not found" when set to auto, the only available setting besides off (I disconnected the disk drive, so that's why it's not being recognized.) When i pressed alt+F, the computer beeped. I reset it and got the same result. The diagnostic lights in the back read GYYG.

GYYG Diagnostic lights, indicate a motherboard failure.

This would indicate you need to replace the motherboard.

For a computer that's 11+ years old, it may not be worth spending money on a used motherboard, but put the money towards buying a newer desktop.

  • How would a motherboard error affect the hard drive being recognized?

  • georgeNotCloony

There are many components that are on the motherboard, the IDE controllers are part of the motherboard, there could also be failed capacitors.
