Used Dell Inspiron One 22 All-in-One - No Display/Dell Splash Screen on Boot-up

This question is not answered

Hello,

Was hoping to obtain some help/advice.  I purchased a used Dell Inspiron One All-in-one computer for my kids.  The unit came wiped clean of O/S.

When I attempted to turn the unit on to install the O/S, the screen is blank.  The power light is on and you can hear the inner workings of the fan/hard drive on boot.

Since I've never dealt with an all-in-one computer before, what is the procedure to properly re-install the O/S?  I've downloaded the Windows 7 Home Premium version that the license key indicates on the back of the unit but, I cannot see anything on boot to progress with the install (i.e. boot into system/bios setup to choose options for boot-up).

My questions are:

1.  Do I need to connect the unit to an external monitor and conect USB keyboard/mouse in order for me to continue?

2.  Or, am I possibly looking at a display issue? Which in this case I would need to contact the vendor I purchased the unit from.

I'm just not sure what to do since I am not seeing anything on the display.

Any thoughts/comments?  Please help.

  • Hi acouty,

If you have purchased the system without any operating system you may install operating system using disk. To install Windows 7 using the disk, you may follow the steps below:

    • Restart or turn on your computer.
    • As soon as the Dell™ logo appears, tap <F12> until ‘One Time Boot Menu’ appears.
    • Use arrow keys to highlight ‘CD/DVD drive’ and press <Enter>.
    • Press <Enter> as soon as you see the message ‘Press any key to boot from CD’.
    • For further information, you may refer to the link: http://bit.ly/14kVsYR.

After installing window, you may install the drivers from the ‘Drivers and Utilities’ disk shipped with the system or you may refer to the link: http://dell.to/10GaKAc, put the system service tag, click on submit to get the list of available drivers for your system. Please ensure you select the correct operating system.

You don’t need any external monitor. However, you may use external keyboard and mouse while installing Windows 7.

Please feel free to reply. I will be glad to assist further.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Thank you for the response.  I don't have an issue with installing the O/S.  That piece I know how to do...if I could get something to appear on the display.  My problem is that I don't even get a Dell splash screen when I power the unit on.  The power light comes on but nothing on the display appears, at all.  Just a black screen.  That's why I was wondering if I should connect an external monitor to see if it is the display.  Didn't get a chance to check this last night.  But will check it today.

    Any other thoughts?

Again, thank you for the response.

  • Thank you for the information. Yes you may try to connect an external monitor and check for the display.

I would suggest you to drain the residual power from the system:

    • Disconnect any external peripherals (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) from the computer
    • Remove the power adapter.
    • Hold down the power button for 10 seconds
    • Plug in the power adapter.
    • Power on the system.

Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist you.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Thank you again for the response.  I'm not sure if I can try the same options but, this is an all-in-one desktop, not a laptop.  Apologies for not indicating this earlier.

  • Hi acouty,

Apologies from my end. I was referring to All-in-One desktop system in the previous post. You may perform the steps given above for the All-in-One desktop.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist you.

  • Thanks for the response/feedback.  I tried the steps above but with not resolution.  I contacted the company that provided the unit and they in-turn provided an RMA for me to return the unit either for repair or replacement.  Thanks again for your help.
