Optiplex 760

This question is not answered

The current BIOS version is A15.  I have tried to install the RS232 Serial Adatper card using PCI-E card slot. I realized that the computer had complained about the card not being a video card.

What gives?   This slot should be a generic pci-e according to the manual.  On the manual, it did not specify that its only for PCI-e graphic card.

  • Hi RonBoucher,

The PCI-e slot on the system is not specifically meant for graphics card. You should be able to install RS232 Serial Adapter card on PCI-e slot.

Please share the operating system and where and when are you getting the error message. Also let me know if the card is fitting properly in the PCI-e slot. Please check if the card is getting detected in ‘Device Manager’ or not. You may follow the steps below:

    • Press ‘Windows’ key + R on ‘Desktop’ screen
    • Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ in run box and press ‘Enter’
    • Check if the card the card is listed here and check for any red X or exclamation mark or question mark besides it.

Keep me posted with the information. I will be glad to assist further.

    Thanks & Regards

  • I had to re-read the error message.  I already have my display-port connected for the 2nd monitor.  Apparently that this computer doesn't like serial card on PCI-e and display port together..  I had to disconnect the 2nd monitor and the computer appears to be accepting the serial card.  Now that I need to get the 2nd montior re-connected again. :-(

  • p.s. no red mark on the card though. the driver for the serial card has been sucessfully installed.

  • Any suggestion for the confliction between the use of this Serial card (PCI-e interface) and DisplayPort? I'm looking into getting the serial port in PCI interface as a last resort.

  • I think the PCI option is the best one: www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx
