Inspiron 660 Wireless Store/App connection on Windows 8

This question is answered
Hi, Just upgraded to Windows 8 on my Inspiron 660 and getting intermittent problems where sometimes store/apps work and sometimes they say they can't connect (even though I can open a browser and see the internet fine). The only way I can resolve this is to disconnect the wireless connection and reconnect again. It uses the in-built 1506 wireless connection that came with the machine and I have the latest Windows 8 drivers. It is practically unusable on Windows 8 it is so intermittent. I have no firewalls enabled at all (or even installed). Can somebody please help? I am pulling my hair out and I'm concerned that I may have to do a complete re-install or even report this as a fault. I believe I can return to base to get this fixed. Thanks Mark Jones

  • Hi Mark Jones,

It seems that the issue occurs while using applications from Windows 8 ‘Start’ screen. Does this happen while using a specific application or it happens randomly with any application? If it’s with a specific application, you can try to uninstall and reinstall it.

Please ensue that the Windows is up to date. Refer to the following link to know how to manage Windows Updates: http://bit.ly/ZFkqLG

Although, you have upgraded to Windows 8 just now, you may also create a new user account with administrative privileges and check if you still face the issue while using the new account, please check the link: http://bit.ly/10h7xsr

Hope this helps. Please reply with the findings. I would be glad to assist further.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Hi,

I've now been looking at this for over a month and still no luck.  This is what I've tried:

    1. Fresh install WIndows 7 - same problem

    2. Fresh install WIndows 8 - same problem

    3. Updated BIOS and 1506 drivers - same proble,m

    4. Windows 8 is completely up to date

Somebody else had exactly my problem with a machine he bought last October and it turned out to be a faulty WIFI card.  The person's 1506 was replaced with a 2230. See here:

    Please recommend next steps please?

    Thanks

  • Hi Mark,

I regret for the late response. Please elaborate the issue you are facing with the system. Is it not able to connect to the internet at all or is it losing connection intermittently or any other issue? It can be a hardware issue as you have installed multiple operating systems but still the issue persists. However, before replacing any hardware component, you may try to make changes to the wireless card settings. Please refer to the steps below:

    • Open Device Manager
    • Expand Network Adapters, right click the wireless card and choose Properties
    • Click the Advanced tab
    • Disable 802.11b Preamble to Long
    • Change Receive Buffers to 300
    • Change Transmit Buffers to 500
    • Click the Power management tab
    • Uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist further.

    Thanks & Regards

  • Hi,

I will try these even though I am not on "b" wireless and my buffers were previously set to 256 and 512.  The unchecked was already set on the power and I've set a power plan to never sleep or switch off the screen.

Will let you know how I get on.  It's frustrating.  I just left the house to download Bioshock Infinite and came bacl to find it had stopped for some reason!  Weird.

Changed the settings and will keep monitoring.  It's almost as if it times out.  It's an intermittent issue by the way.

    Thanks

    Mark

  • Hi Mark,

I understand your concern and your frustrations. However the wireless should work fine after making the above mentioned changes.

  • Hi,

Well the changes you suggested didn't make a difference but I did uninstall the Dell Wireless program from Programs and Features.  So I just had the drivers installed.

Since I've done this it's dropped one time only.  Far better than previously.  And today I've streamed music for over 8 hours without a glitch.

So maybe this program was the problem after all?
