Dell Dimension 3100 Upgrade

This question is not answered

I'm a little short of cash now so I'm planning to do a small upgrade to my Dell Dimension 3100.

Can I upgrade the memory and CPU so I can run Windows 7, currently is on  OS: Windows XP SP3 (32 bit), CPU: Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHZ,
Graphics:  Intel 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset V6.14.10.4410, Memory:  1 GB DDR2 SDRAM, Motherboard:   Dell Inc. 0JC474, HD: 145GB.

Can be done with the memory and CPU or I should remain with XP ?  Can't find an answer on the Dell website ,, any advice..

  • Hi Chappy08,

What you need to do is run the Win 7 upgrade advisor. Yes, you'll need a video card, but I think you would also want to know what else you need before you take the plunge.

A Socket LGA 775 Prescott, P4 3.4gb, 800FSB is the maximum size processor that can be installed.

The E310/3100 supports a maximum of 2gb [2x1gb modules] of memory, see HERE

    The e310/3100 doesn't have 64-bit support.

The only video cards supported by the e310 are PCI, or low-bandwidth PCI x1 cards, this PC does not support PCI-Express x16 or AGP

Have you tried running Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor?

  • yes can but u can run windows 7 on your current setup windows 7 only requires 512 of ram ddr2 is fast enough your are running 1gb that's plenty
  • We have since learned that this model supports at least 4gb of memory. PCIe-x1 video cards are available from more than one manufacturer, too.

    This model will support 64-bit WIndows 7 and 8, and 32-bit 8.1.

  • You cannot upgrade from XP OR VISTA with Windows 8.1
You must have VISTA SP1 and VISTA SP2 installed to upgrade
from Vista Home to windows 8.0 or Vista Business to Windows 8.0 PRO.

    Watching DVDs requires a separate
Windows Media Center license update pack.

To install  64-bit WIN8.1 on a 64-bit PC, your processor and BIOS
must support 64 Bit PAE, NX, SSE2,CMPXCHG16b, PrefetchW, and LAHF/SAHF

    Client Hyper-V requires a 64-bit system with
    second level address translation (SLAT)
capabilities and additional 2 GB of RAM

Graphics card:128 Meg RAM Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device
    with VISTA32 or VISTA64 WDDM 1.0 driver

Using Directx9 drivers requires the June 2010 Directx patch.

You download and extract into folder then run DXSETUP.EXE
