xps 400 windows xp pro 32 or 64 bit

This question is not answered

hi,

ihave an xps 400 ofj030 mobo, 945p chipset express with an upgrade to a pentium d 960 3.6 ghz dual core and 4gb ram. so the question is how can i tell if i have 32 bit xp or 64 bit xp. i do know that i have x86 architecture. i did have 3.75gb ram usable until i added a radeon 1 gb graghics card and now shows 3.5gb ram.

i read 64 bit version can run more ram like windows 7 64bit but i will still read 4 gb but it will utilize more ram. also intel says u can install 8gb ddr2 ram but there is only 4x1 gb addres lines in the bios. so what do i have and if it is 32 bit is their a download to upgrade too 64 bit. any help please i may install 8 gb in 4 slots???

  • Hi xpsconfigure,

Please follow the steps provided below to determine if the copy of Windows XP is 32-bit or 64-bit:

1.Click "Start", and then click "Run."
2.Type "sysdm.cpl" without quotes, and then click "OK."
3.Click the "General" tab. The operating system is displayed as follows:
a.For a 64-bit version operating system, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version < Year> appears under System.
b.For a 32-bit version operating system, Windows XP Professional Version appears under System.

Intel 945P Express Chipset can support only up to 4GB RAM. Hence, the address lines cannot be increased to support additional memory capacity. Please visit the following link for further information:

I hope the information provided is helpful.

  • thanks rajath,

yes i check the intel before it states dependeant on memory type? also i did get a chipset driver update manually and it has been in. im not sure what the new driver will do if much? it would be nice to find a chipset mobo that will run my D960 and support the 8 gb...maybe the 975x chipset and if so what is the board number too look for?

32 bit at the moment :-(

  • There were very few Dell systems sold with XP 64 bit and most were Precision Workstation.

The maximum memory on this system is stated to be 4 GB:

In addition a quick look at your processor:

    http://ark.intel.com/products/27522/Intel-Pentium-D-Processor-960-(4M-Cache-3_60-GHz-800-MHz-FSB)

Has a 64 bit Instruction set but a Physical Address Extension of 32 bit so I guess the processor can't use more RAM.

The only 2 OS Dell offered on this model are XP 32 bit and Vista 32 bit. Likely Windows 7 32 bit will work.

Run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to see if the model is 64 bit compatible:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor
