Touch screen stops working on new Inspiron One 2330

This question has suggested answer(s)

Hi,

I have had a new Inspiron One 2330 with Windows 8 and touch screen for about 3 weeks now. Every few days the touch screen stops working and I need to reboot to get it to work again. I find this very annoying for a new computer and am worried it's just going to get worse. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure if it's something that can be easy fixed or I need to have the computer replaced.

Cheers,

Narelle

  • Hi Narelle,

Please try the following troubleshooting steps:
    1. Update system BIOS:
Note: Before flashing the BIOS please check the following:
    - Adapter should be connected
    - No external devices should be connected
    - All other programs should be closed and documents saved
    - Ensure that the system gets power supply through UPS (Uninterrupted power supply)

    - Click http://dell.to/Vhwpwx to download the latest system BIOS
    - Click on “Get driver”
    - Save the BIOS on your desktop
    - Right click on it and select “Run as administrator”
    - Follow the prompts on screen to install BIOS (System may produce beep sounds and may restart)
    - Restart the computer and re-check

    2. If the issue persists, try updating 'Chip-set Drivers'
    - Click http://dell.to/VuiVzl to download the latest chip-set driver
    - Click on “Get driver”
    - Save the file on your desktop
    - Right click on it and select “Run as administrator”
    - Follow the prompts on screen to install
    - Restart the laptop and re-check

    3. If the issue still persists, try re-calibrating the touch on the screen
    - Select the 'Settings menu' from the charms
    - Select 'Control Panel' from the 'Settings menu'
    - Click 'Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input'
    - On the following screen tap the 'cross hair' each time it appears on screen and save the calibration settings

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

  • I am having the exact same problem with the same system. I just updated the BIOS as described by the DELL agent. I'll update this post with any results after several days.

  • Hi chiefplt,

Glad that you have updated the system BIOS; would like to know the system performance. Does the touchscreen feature work optimally now?

  • I have the exact same issue with my brand new Inspiron One 2330 with Windows 8. I have to restart the computer to get my touch screen to work. This is very aggravating. I tried your suggestions and the problem continues. Maybe I need a new computer.

  • I have an Inspiron one 2330  non touch screen. I purchased mine at the end of August. It has done this since day one. So far they have replaced the mother board. The screen continued to go dark.Dell referred me to Microsoft. Mico told me to have them update the bios and driver update. Dell did that, and several calls later they are telling me they need to order another mother board and hard drive and send someone to install.

They keep sending me CYA emails making it seem like they have fixed the problem. I called again today to tell them it has not been resolved even though I got a phone call and email today, indicating they think it had been.

I also told them I had the problem prior to Windows 8. I am writing this so anyone can see their is a problem with this computer model and they have not addressed it. Hope this helps someone. Bunky

  • Hi ram952,

Please try the following 'Hotfix' from Microsoft to fix the Touchscreen issue: http://bit.ly/SxqapR

    - Click 'Hotfix download available'
    - Click 'I accept'
    - Select 'Windows 8 RTM x64
    - Enter your 'Email address' twice
    - Enter 'security code'
    - Click 'Request for the Hotfix'

Access your email to use this Hotfix as per the on-screen instructions and recheck the touchscreen on your system.

Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions. Glad to assist.

  • Hi Saurabh.

I'm also having the same problem with my touchscreen. The hotfix you refer to is only for the RTM release of windows 8 and does not install (or is already included) in the final release version.

  • I have tried all these troubleshooting steps and had the following results.

    1. Made no difference at all

    2. Tried to update the chip set driver and got the following message "The computer does not meet the minimum requirement for installing the software. Setup will exit"

    3. Cannot see this option in the control panel - Click 'Calibrate the screen for pen or touch input'

I also tried to install the hotfix and got the following error "an error occured while unzipping. One or more files were not successfully unzipped. The error code is 40"

Do you have any more suggestions? I find this very bad especially as I paid extra to have a touch screen!!

  • I have this issues as well....

  • I got an answer from another thread stating that the problem is a windows issue, Microsoft is aware of it and they are working on a patch. This to me is a big deal as Windows 8 is obviously pushing the whole touch screen palaver and Microsoft are not openly detailing a serious flaw in their software.

  • Dell need to be pushing Microsoft for some answers too.

  • Touchscreen just failed again without coming from hibernation or sleep. This is a major problem , flaw , fault whatever you want to call it. It needs to be addressed and repaired now or everyone who bought a windows 8 dell 2330 should have a full refund including postage!!

  • The hardware does not work as advertised.

  • The fault description screen I got before from Microsoft related to a problem that occurred when returning from a hibernating position. Just now I have had the problem during use.
