Inspiron 537 Power / Button Issue

This question is answered

Can someone please help!

Have an Inspiron 537 with what I'm thinking may be a power supply issue but not sure.  It always has the solid green light on the back.

Sometimes I press the power button and it will turn on fine - other times it will do nothing.  I've tested by shutting it down and turning back on a number of times - sometimes it starts up, other times it doesn't.

When it didn't start up, I've tried taking the power cord out and pressing the power button in for 15 seconds.  Sometimes that works the first time and sometimes it doesn't.  I might have to do that a couple of times before it turns on.

I was thinking about replacing the power supply but am not sure if this sounds like a problem with that or maybe the power button itself or something else.  Once the machine turns on, it's fine and doesn't turn itself off.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks

  • Hi FPMH-Parker,

    Thanks for the reply.

This definitely seems to be the power supply. You can go ahead and change it and that should take care of the issue. while replacing the power supply also check the connector between the motherboard and the power supply. If the system comes up at times without any problem, there is no issue with the motherboard.

Please respond in case you need any further assistance or clarification.

  • Hi FPMH-Parker,

    Welcome to the community.

This seems to be a issue with the power supply, but it might be the motherboard as well. Try to disconnect all the cables including the power from the back of the tower. the light at the back of the tower will go off. Once all the cables are  disconnected, press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds, then connect the power cable back and check whether the light comes back on at the back of the tower. if the light is off, try to connect the rest of the cables one by one and then start up the system and check.

You can also try to use the monitor power cable, and check in case there is any sort of fault with the cable.

Also check  the below link, if the system is within warranty

  • Thank you Abhishek - With all the cables disconnected, the green light comes back on as soon as I plug power back in.

Already tried changing all cables and that didn't help.

Is there a foolproof way to make sure it's not the mother board?  I'm actually helping someone with this and will get her a new power supply and install but want to make sure that's the problem before I have her spend the 60$ only to find out that's not the problem.

Many Thanks in advance for yoour answers!!

  • I am having the same problem. The last time the power went off and computer would not start. It sounds like a design problem.

Any one else having the same problem?

As you have posted in a Inspiron 537 thread, I'll assume that you have the same model computer.

Have you tried installing a replacement 'Known' working power supply, to see if it makes a difference.

  • Yes, I've got a D537 Inspiron purchased in 2009. This has been a recurring problem for a couple of years. It just happened again yesterday. I shut down the computer overnight and it would not start in the morning. I tried pushing the on button for several hours and it finally worked. I don't imagine it is a power supply problem. I think it is a design problem but I'm not a techie so I don't know.

  • Going through the same situation. I had numerous instances where the power button was unresponsive but eventually was able to turn to computer on.  However, as of last night, after numerous attempts for hours, to no avail. It maybe a design problem.  I called Dell, they claim that it is a motherboard issue. Wil have to troubleshoot againt to see if the light on the motherboard is lit.
